The National Priorities Project considers itself the “people’s guide to the federal budget.” Lindsay Koshgarian, NPP Program Director, will join us to share new research on the costs of national security since the 9/11 attacks. The Peace Festival

The Peace Festival will include: exhibitions, talks, discussions, workshops, films, music and entertainment and children’s activities. Parallel online events will include short films, videos, speakers and discussion forums.

The exhibition will remain in place for nine days and be open to the public with events each day, as a celebration of peace. All groups with an interest in peace, in any of its manifestations, are invited to set up a display or stall at a minimal cost. This will be an opportunity for new connections to be made and new initiatives to arise. Please join us in helping plan and shape this important event.

Violence De-Escalation Skills Training

Day 1:  Saturday, September 18th introduces you to the foundations of nonviolence and an analysis of the cycle of nonviolence along with entry level violence de-escalation skills.
Day 2:  Sunday, September 19th  focuses on advanced communication and violence de-escalation skills and how to “think outside the box”.

Reclaiming Freedom, with David Cayley, John McKnight & Peter Block

Drawing on David's most recent book, Ivan Illich: An Intellectual Journey, this conversation will explore Illich's understanding of free relatedness and it's implications for communal life. This event will draw on poetry and music and attendees will be invited to be active participants in this emerging conversation.

David Cayley is a Canadian writer and broadcaster. He has produced and presented hundreds of radio documentaries, including two five-hour series with Ivan Illich, and published seven books, among them The Rivers North of the Future: The Testament of Ivan Illich & Ivan Illich: An Intellectual Journey.

The Other Slavery: Histories of Indian Bondage from New Spain to the Southwestern United States

Join the Smithsonian for a virtual symposium that explores the hidden stories of enslaved Indigenous peoples, focusing on the legacy of Spanish colonization in the Americas and Asia and its impact on what is now the southwestern United States. Experts from a range of academic disciplines, including Indigenous studies, anthropology, and history, will examine untold stories of coerced labor and peonage and the long-term impact of Indian slavery. Panelists will discuss the legacies of Native American enslavement with Indigenous community leaders and cultural workers. The symposium will delve into the different forms and complexity of human bondage that resulted in hybrid cultures, tangled economic practices, and intricate social relationships between the Spanish and Indigenous communities. Overall, this program seeks to give a comprehensive “first voice” to these hushed stories and living legacies.
