On OSX 10.8.2, install worked and mt command functions as documented.  dd command also works. However, tar fails:

% tar cvf /dev/rst0 ~/Desktop
tar: Failed to open '/dev/rst0'
Exit 1

% which tar
/usr/bin/tar
% which mt
/usr/local/bin/mt
% tar --version
bsdtar 2.8.3 - libarchive 2.8.3

I had the same problem at first.  sudo-ing the tar command fixed the problem.  I chalk it up to a poor error message from tar... and standard unix permissions.  It threw me for a few minutes, because I didn't expect the driver to work, but once I figured that out, everything has been running well.
