Have you tried smpt.idt.net?
The fact that you are using an academic account to receive mail makes it
*appear* that you don't have an account with IDT. If that is indeed the fact,
it would explain why you can not connect nor send mail.

3) When I try the server MAIL-RELAY2.IDT.NET I get this error.

4) My dad has a domian name registered and hosted by IDT. Along with this
he has several diffrent email addresses that forward to a single email
account. I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not, but I
thought the info might help.

It still looks like you are trying to send mail through IDT while connected to
your academic account. I believe that what you are experiencing is IDT's
counter-spam initiatives.
Try logging in under your father's account and then try sending mail using
smtp.idt.net as your server.

don't you use a SMTP *client* to send mail? i thought the server was
the thing that receives it.

Johan Kullstam [kull...@ne.mediaone.net] Don't Fear the Penguin!
Semantics. An SMTP server both receives and sends mail (using SMTP).
The problem is that mail-relay2 and mail.idt.net do not allow relaying from
your location. If they did, they would be called an "open relay". It
doesn't matter (or rather, shouldn't matter) whether you use an idt.net
return address. A spammer could just as easily forge his address as someone
@idt.net and get away with sending out mail.
If you are sending mail from ttu.edu, then you should use ttu.edu's smtp
servers.

or just use your own. i never understood the need to relay.
