We are pleased to invite contributions to the special issue on “Web Audio Collaborative Music” to appear in the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society (https://aes2.org/publications/journal/).

Browser engineers have continuously improved the capabilities of web browsers to play, process, and record audio over the last decade. With most parts of the Web Audio API supported by all major web browsers, rich audio applications in the browser such as interactive sound experiences, sound editors, digital audio workstations, music live coding environments, capabilities for online audio analysis and visualization, extended reality, and diverse types of collaborative music-making applications are now reality. As a result, many designers and developers have recently focused on building new frameworks, tools, and applications on top of Web Audio technologies, advancing a creative, often collaborative or simply socially aware, perspective in sound generation, manipulation, and distribution. In this special issue, we welcome unpublished work presenting advanced web audio tools, frameworks, and applications, which contribute to the theme of Web Audio collaborative music and feature research on—but not restricted to—the topics listed below:

  • Web-based live coding environments;
  • Collaborative environments for audio and music generation and performance;
  • Frameworks and tools featuring new abstractions on top of Web Audio API and other related APIs;
  • Innovative audio-based web applications and instruments;
  • Audio transmission and resynthesis;
  • Web Audio frameworks for audio synthesis, processing, analysis, and transformation;
  • Development tools, practices, and strategies for web audio applications; and
  • Web Audio API, Web MIDI, WebRTC, and other existing or emerging web standards for audio and music.
Submissions will be judged based on their academic quality, novelty, and relevance to the aforementioned topics. Authors of excellent contributions to relevant conferences, such as the 7th Web Audio Conference (WAC 2024), Internet of Sounds 2024, and Sound and Music Computing 2024 may submit a revised and extended version of their paper to this special issue.

GUEST EDITORS
  • Michel Buffa (University Côte d’Azur, France)
  • Ariane Stolfi (University of São Paulo, Brazil)
  • Benjamin Matuzewski (IRCAM, France)
  • Hans Lindetorp (Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden)

All submissions will be peer-reviewed according to standard JAES review procedures. We welcome original research and review papers as well as revised and expanded versions of conference papers addressing the theme of this special issue. Please follow the Author Guidelines found at https://www.aes.org/journal/authors/guidelines/

The normal page limit for JAES articles is 10 pages. Papers should be submitted online at https://aes2.org/publications/journal-of-the-audio-engineering-society/submit-a-paper-to-the-aes-journal/
