Study Name:
Telematic Performance Encounters with Space-Agents: Human/Machine Collaborative Musicking with VASE

Purpose of the Research:
This study seeks musicians with experience in telematic performance, to gauge their responses to a newly developed computational system, VASE (Virtual Acoustic Spatial Entities).
Musical play sessions will explore compositional and performance outcomes of using VASE in practice, and gather experiences of participants.
Participant experiences will contribute to knowledge in the field of telematic music and help in investigating the role of autonomous spatial agents in collaborative telematic performance with spatial composition.
Data/observations collected from your participation will be used in doctoral dissertation writing.
Participation Requirements:
Previous experience with musical performance in telematic contexts
Access to a reliable wired internet connection, headphones, and any necessary technology for your chosen instrumentation
What You Will Be Asked to Do in the Research:
Participants will take part in musical group play over the internet using the VASE system.
Three forms of participation will be available:
Performance, a follow-up survey, and a follow-up interview.
Each element of participation follows the previous, but consent and participation may be revoked by you at any time.
Group performance sessions will last approximately (~1 hour), scheduled at mutually convenient times.
Immediately following performance sessions, you will be asked to provide qualitative feedback through an online survey (~10 mins).
A follow-up interview (~30 mins) will be scheduled to discuss your experience and feedback at a later date after performance sessions, chosen between the researcher and participant. Interviews will address qualitative reflections to the performance experience captured in previously completed surveys.
Audio/video/and photographic recording will be used as part of the research and data collection process. Recordings will not be taken of any participant who does not consent prior to participation.
Play techniques and musical approach to the session will be observed and recorded. Participation in later public performance sessions is optional. Participants may choose to omit their participation in any follow-up publication or documentation material, while still performing in play sessions.
Benefits of the Research and Benefits to You:
Participation in the project will provide performers an opportunity to engage with software which augments musical action that is not commercially available. Participants may gain insight into their performance techniques, and perception of space within telematic performance settings.
Musicians will be placed in performance groups, introducing musicians to new collaborators in the field.
Collection of performance observations from participants will drive discussion in dissertation writing about outcomes and affordances of the developed system in telematic music performance.

Risks and Discomforts
We do not foresee any risks or discomfort from your participation in the research.
Voluntary Participation and Withdrawal
Your participation in the study is completely voluntary and you may choose to stop participating at any time. Your decision not to volunteer, to stop participating, or to refuse to answer particular questions will not influence the nature of the ongoing relationship you may have with the researchers or study staff, or the nature of your relationship with York University either now, or in the future.
In the event you withdraw from the study, all associated data collected will be immediately destroyed wherever possible.
Confidentiality
Unless you choose otherwise, all information you supply during the research will be held in confidence and unless you specifically indicate your consent, your name will not appear in any report or publication of the research.
Performance sessions will be recorded (audio & video). Post session surveys will be text based and conducted online. Follow-up interviews will be recorded for transcription. Your data will be safely stored on an encrypted hard drive and only the researcher will have access to this information. Confidentiality will be provided to the fullest extent possible by law.
The data collected in this research project may be used – in an anonymized form - by members of the research team in subsequent research investigations exploring similar lines of inquiry. Such projects will still undergo ethics review by the HPRC, our institutional REB. Any secondary use of anonymized data by the research team will be treated with the same degree of confidentiality and anonymity as in the original research project. Please note that at the end of the study, de-identified data may be deposited into one or more publicly accessible scientific repositories via Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International, such as York University Dataverse, so that data may be inspected and analyzed by other researchers. The data that will be shared on the York University Dataverse and in subsequent publications will not contain any information that can identify you.
The researcher(s) acknowledge that the host of the online survey (Google Forms) may automatically collect participant data without their knowledge (i.e., IP addresses.) Although this information may be provided or made accessible to the researchers, it will not be used or saved without participant’s consent on the researcher’s system. Further, “Because this project employs e-based collection techniques, data may be subject to access by third parties as a result of various security legislation now in place in many countries and thus the confidentiality and privacy of data cannot be guaranteed during web-based transmission.
Please be advised that although the researchers will take every precaution to maintain confidentiality of the data, the nature of live performance sessions prevents the researchers from guaranteeing confidentiality. If you choose to have video displayed in the Zoom meetings, other participants will be able to see your image. You may elect to have video hidden and an alias for display name if you prefer. The researchers would like to remind participants to respect the privacy of your fellow participants and not repeat what is said in the performance session to others.
Teleconferencing/videoconferencing technology has some privacy and security risks. It is possible that information could be intercepted by unauthorized people (hacked) or otherwise shared by accident. This risk can’t be completely eliminated. We want to make you aware of this. If you are concerned about this, we would be happy to make alternative arrangements (where possible) for you to participate. Please contact h...@yorku.ca for further information. Please note that it is the expectation that participants agree not to make any unauthorized recordings of the content of a meeting / data collection session.
