Dear Coastal High-Frequency Radar (HFR) and Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) Communities,
Bottom line up front (BLUF): Prior to 6/24/2026, would you please fill out the survey
here to assist the U.S. IOOS Office and its Surface Currents Program in forming a HFR Community Team of volunteer technical advisors to provide feedback on scientific and technical challenges in support of maintaining a healthy, functional U.S. IOOS HFR National Network and advancing the evidence-based use cases for its products?
To elaborate...
As I spoke about at the recent 2026 IOOS Spring Meeting in Washington, DC and 14th Radiowave Operators Working Group Meeting (ROWG-14) in Newport, Oregon (and online, as it was a hybrid meeting), the IOOS Surface Currents Program is forming a coastal
HFR Community Team to serve as volunteer technical advisors, and we would like your feedback to assist this effort. Similar to the past National HFR Technical Steering Team (see: "Meeting Summaries" tab
here), this new HFR Community Team aims to address the scientific and technical challenges inherent in maintaining a healthy, functional U.S. IOOS HFR National Network, and to provide evidence-based feedback to IOOS leadership and other groups looking into IOOS's observing efforts. To be clear, this Team is not a Federal Advisory Committee and won't be asked to provide consensus recommendations; instead we hope for broad participation that invites a variety of perspectives from members including representatives from IOOS Regional Associations (RAs), the IOOS Office, and Principal Investigators (PIs) engaged in HFR-related research, development, and operations.
More information about the forthcoming HFR Community Team, its structure, and key areas of responsibility is given in
this Google Form along with questions for you to help get this team started off on the right foot. Sarina Mann, who is with the U.S. IOOS Office, is Cc'd on this e-mail and is working in support of this survey. If you have any questions about this Google Form, please reach out to
sarin...@noaa.gov. Thank you all in advance for your feedback and continued support of IOOS and its HFR National Network!
Best regards,
Brian
