NOAA Fisheries is recruiting 6 Data Scientists <Data Scientist, ZP-1560-2/3/4>.These are new positions within the Office of Science and Technology that will join multidisciplinary teams across the agency to curate and design analytic workflows and data life-cycles. These positions will support Cloud Migration and Workflow Optimization, Data Modernization efforts, Open Science/ Open Data, and AI/ML applications across the agency.
These positions will require someone with skills in reproducible workflows used in marine and earth sciences data science. This involves experience in R and/or Python, specifically in frameworks for reproducible reports and analyses in R and/or Python, such as development environments (RStudio, Jupyter, or VS Code), authoring (such as RMarkdown or Quarto), continuous integration workflows for R and Python (e.g., GitHub Actions), version control (Git and GitHub), containerization for R and Python (e.g., Docker images), and application development (e.g., Shiny or Streamlit).
The position will require effective people and project management and communication skills to coordinate across the agency and work with cross-functional and interdisciplinary teams. Also, the position may require leading/co-leading teaching workshops for using the reproducible tools that are developed, and participating in “co-work” time with science staff will be a core part of the position. Development of documentation and tutorials for the tools will also be required.
Candidate Requirements:
Technical Skills: Proficiency in R or Python, with hands-on experience in Git and GitHub.
Communication: Strong written and verbal skills, with an ability to present to diverse technical and non-technical audiences and conduct training workshops.
Cloud & AI: Foundational cloud and AI practitioner skills, coupled with a commitment to continuous learning in these evolving fields.
Leadership: Core program and people management experience, essential for coordinating national, interdisciplinary projects.
Preferred but not essential: prior experience with RMarkdown/Quarto/Sphinx, building R or Python packages, creating docker images, GitHub Actions or similar, and/or Shiny applications.
Positions are available at ZP 3/4 as well as developmental positions at band 2.
