Greetings,
IOOS is pleased to announce that we’ve been approved to mentor seven new open source contributor projects as part of the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2026 program!
This year’s IOOS GSoC project roster includes projects from IOOS, NOS OCS, NOS CO-OPS, NOAA Fisheries, and WHOI, and is available at: https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/programs/2026/organizations/ioos.
Congratulations to applicants whose proposals were accepted and thank you to everyone who applied to one of IOOS’ GSOC 2026 project ideas. We wish you all the best going forward and encourage you to continue to pursue your ambitions in open source software development and to contribute to open source communities such as IOOS and GSoC - participation by new contributors is essential to sustaining open source software - thank you!
Next steps for the GSoC program include the ‘community bonding’ period from May 1 - 24, where new contributors and mentors get to know each other, make arrangements for regular check-in meetings and virtual communications, and otherwise begin to plan their project execution for the summer.
The official start of the summer coding period this year is May 25, so right around the corner!
The full GSoC timeline is available at: https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline.
IOOS will schedule an introductory meeting for new contributors and mentors during the community bonding period, and we’ll likely repeat our monthly Org-wide check-in meetings where contributors and mentors can share their project progress with the full cohort. More details to follow.
Lastly, thank you to all of the GSoC mentors that submitted project ideas to IOOS’ GSoC application this year: the GSoC program is truly about the mentor/mentee relationship and none of these projects would be possible without your willingness to volunteer your time and guide your mentees to success in completing their projects.
Sincerely,
Micah, Matt, Filipe
