Dear Coastal High-Frequency Radar (HFR) Communities of Practice and Interest,
Since I know many of you have oceanographic interests beyond HFR, I wanted to bring to your attention that the United States' National Science Foundation (NSF) has published a Dear Colleague Letter (DCL), requesting input on NSF-led ocean observing priorities. Please see the DCL
NSF 26-024 here, which was published today for more details. Input is requested by September 30, 2026.
This follows NSF's initial plans to shut down much of the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). On June 18, NSF
announced that they would pause these plans while requesting public input on the value of NSF ocean observing. In addition to OOI, NSF investments in ocean observations include mid-scale infrastructure (e.g.,
GO-BGC Argo program,
Cascadia Offshore Subduction Zone Observatory), and individual research projects that provide time series and longer-term observations.
Feel free to disseminate through your channels.
V/R,
Brian
