Hey Mathew, here is this week’s ESIP Update - March 23, 2026

ESIP News and Updates

ESIP Endorses new Guide for Publishing Physical Samples

We are thrilled to announce ESIP’s formal endorsement of the "Publishing Open Research Using Physical Samples: Guidance for Authors."

Physical samples — geologic cores, water samples, biological specimens — are the bedrock of research. Yet, they often lack the digital visibility needed for others to find and reuse them. This guide aims to change that.

Developed by the ESIP Physical Sample Curation Cluster, these guidelines help authors make their work FAIR and prevent data loss, boost impact, standardize workflows, plus more best practices to provide a clear bridge between physical specimens and the digital research ecosystem.

Let’s move toward a future where samples are as accessible as the data derived from them.

Call for Feedback: ESIP Data Help Desk - Data Repositories Guide

The ESIP Data Help Desk and Open Science Clusters have released a community review version of the ESIP Data Help Desk – Data Repositories Guide. This printable resource highlights major repositories and portals to assist help desk volunteers answer the two most common questions: “Where can I find data?” and “Where can I store data?”

This community review period is intended to gather broader input before publishing Version 1 of the guide. Suggestions for additional repositories, corrections, or general comments are welcome.

Feedback is open through April 13. If you have questions, please contact datahe...@esipfed.org.

Upcoming ESIP Meeting

Featured Collaboration Area activities…

The Data Help Desk (DHD) Cluster has a new data repository quick reference guide in production, and would like your feedback! The review period will close after April 13.

If you missed it, the newest ESIP Cluster — EO for Land Management — had their introductory call at the beginning of March. Catch up with the kickoff recording on YouTube!

And last month, the Data Readiness Cluster hosted Anthony Kougkas from the Illinois Institute of Technology and the Gnosis Research Center to discuss context engineering as the discipline of building dynamic systems that deliver the right data, metadata, and tools to AI agents at the right time. From his abstract: “The vision is not to replace scientists but to amplify scientific intuition by automating the tedious data orchestration so researchers can focus on discovery.” Find the recording.

Collaboration Area recordings get posted to YouTube. Did you know that ESIP has over 1000 videos available for the Earth science data community? Explore videos and playlists on our channel!
