Hi All,

Ytai asked me to open a thread describing my new app IOIOScript so here it is:-

It's currently in beta on Google Play and I hope that some of you will try it out and let me know what you think.

It allows anyone with a little bit of Javascript knowledge to write IOIO apps directly on the phone or tablet... yes, you can even write your IOIO apps on the bus! (Although those with very small phones will probably find it easier to use notepad++ on a PC).

It should be great for those that want to build IOIO projects but don't know much about programming or simply don't have the time to grapple with the Android SDK. The app also allows scripting access to the phone/tablet's sensors, networking, camera, graphics, sdcard...etc and comes with plenty of samples and on-phone documentation.

One of the cooler sample programs allows you to stream video from your phone to your PC over WiFi and send commands to the phone, so you could for example make a remotely operated vehicle. (You can also use JavaScript on the PC side too).

I'm eagerly adding new stuff every week so let me know what you think should be added.

Oh...I nearly forgot. For those of you who dabble in Mindstorms, it also allows you to control the NXT via Bluetooth aswell :)

Regards
David

That sounds very promising!
Do you have API docs somewhere? How does one get started?

Simply install the app from Google Play and all the documentation and samples are right there, built into the app.

Hi David,

I just purchased your app. When I try to execute it I got the message
"Application not licensed... Please purchase it from Android Market".
But this is what I have done.

Could you please help me?

Please make sure you have a good internet connection the first time you run the app (so it can get a license).

The license should then last you 7 days before you need to have an internet connection again.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi Dave,

I suppose I have a "good internet connection" but I get the same error
message or sometimes the "google play store" opens. There I got the
options to "remove the application" or to "start it". Starting the
application leeds to nothing.
.
What do you exactly mean by a "good internet connection"?

Hello David,
I installed IOIOScript on my nexus S 4.1.2 without trouble but didn't succed on Nexus7 4.2.1!
I am still waiting for my new IOIO board. My former one was out order. I'll let you know about the use or IOIOScript. I am beginner in programming so it will be a good test.:-)

Welcome aboard!

It should run fine on your nexus 7 as I run it on one with jelly bean at home.  What happens when you run it on the nexus 7?

Thanks

Hi David,

1-When I try to install IOIOScript from my PC using play.google.com/store/apps, I cannot select my NEXUS7  4.2.1 device. (already install on my NEXUS S 4.1.2).

2-f I try to install using Google Play directly on my NEXUS7, I get a message: "Your device is not compatible with this version"

Of course it would be much more comfortable for me tu use my NEXUS 7.

Let me know if you find the reason for this incompatibility.

i2c purpose...

Hi David,

For my project I will need to use i2c to read a CMPS10 compass.
http://www.robot-electronics.co.uk/htm/cmps10i2c.htm

I didn't see any i2c sample in IOIOScript?

Feel free to add  such an example in your next version   ;-)

Hi,

there is an application for the CMPS02 compass in the "IOIO Example"
App in Play Store including the code. This App is for free and you
find the compass example under I2C\Digital Compass.

There is just one error in the Circuit diagram. You need to add two
pull-up resistors (10k) from SCL and SDA to +5V.

Hi,

I just discovered that the app was not showing up on Google Play for Nexus 7 users because it requests a front facing camera in the app manifest, so I've made this a non-compulsory requirement and re-published the app (with added Bluetooth support too).

It should appear on Google Play in the next few hours.

It can work using ether UART, PWM or I2C.
I have tried I2C and PWM using IOIO Examples and it's OK.

Hi David, I purchased the app and would like to suggest an addition.  I am going to make an electric vehicle "dashboard" with photo-realistic vintage guages incorporated with the data output (reading voltage, rpm, etc.).  Can you add the ability for circular gauges with needles and overlays for gif or jpgs to do this or is there already a way?  Also, if I am reading voltages, is there an easy way to "scale" the incoming voltage from say 03.3v to read like0-90v?  Obviousluy I am talking about voltage dividers, etc...
Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff,  I've just added image rotation, scaling and translation... especially for you ;)

You can find a special version of 1.05 on the IOIOScript google group here:-

I'll do some better documentation when I release 1.06 but the sample program included should get you going.

Regarding the voltage measurements:-  I guess you will need to use a voltage divider as you suggest and make sure you scale the voltage down to 3.3 volts maximum and then in the JavaScript code you can simply translate that to a rotation angle for your guage needle using a bit of simple math.

David,  In your app, is there a way to create a true stand-alone app?  In other words, not use the launcher from your app?  This would be after you develop an app so it is its own file.  I assume you could do it by applying the java into an IDE on a computer, etc.  Anyway, if you can generate from within your app, how do you do it and can you change the icon for the android launcher environment?
Thanks,
Jeff

Another question:  I am not a programmer--what is the "translation" function doing?  And how do you reverse rotation?  Is there a good online reference showing the parameters and their min/max values (like for size of objects, etc.)

Final question:  To insert the bluetooth module text (I see that in the samples) into an existing script, what are the rules and syntaxes for where it needs to go and not interrupt the flow of the main activity?

Bug?:  In playing with the app trying to place the cursor directly between two letters characters or dragging the blue flag around are very inaccurate (at least on my NOTE II device).  Can you check that?  It is frustratng to cut paste and select based on this problem.  To clarify, placing the cursor and trying to drag for example, the blue flag jumps far away?!

Hi Jeff,

The latest beta version allows you to create home screen shortcuts for your programs (long press the launcher button).  This will allow you to create a shortcut to launch your program as a standalone app without showing the launcher.  It also allows you to provide your own icon.

You can find this version here:-    http://bit.ly/12QWpox

If you are thinking about distributing or publishing your own app on the market, then that is a different matter... I'm not quite sure how I'm going to deal with that.  I might allow people to license my engine for a small fee or build them special versions of the app....I'm still thinking about that.

Regarding the "Translation function": I've rename it to "Move" as it makes more sense.  It simply moves the image by a fraction horizontally and vertically. You will have to Scale the image first or it will disappear off the edge. (Note: parameters are given in fractions of the image width/height).

You can reverse rotation by subtracting values off the angle. I.e.  in the sample code just change "angle +=3"  to  "angle -=3"  (although in your program you could set the angle directly to anything you want in degrees and the image will jump to that angle).

To use Bluetooth, all you need to do is include the "Bluetooth" parameter to the CreateIOIO function like this:-

    ioio = app.CreateIOIO( "Bluetooth" );

and that's it!

(Make sure you have a compatible Bluetooth dongle inserted and paired)

David

Okay cool. Thanks for that!

I see how to make the shortcut and it references the ioioscript folder to get the icon but how do you assign or reassign an icon?

Also, how can you assign a backround image overall on a page?

Finally, how ca you select between pages like sliding off, etc.

Yhanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff,

The icon will be picked up every time you create a shortcut (Android copies it to the home screen).  So you need to change the icon in 'Img' sub folder and delete then re-create the shortcut to change the icon on the home screen.

Use the lay.SetBackground() function to set the background image of a layout.

I've added a 'Layout Slide'  sample to the latest beta version which shows how to set background images and slide layouts on and off the screen.

I've also added some examples of using 3rd party HTML5 libraries to draw pretty gauges and graphs.

You can find the latest beta here:   http://bit.ly/12QWpox

Sounds good! Only that accessing the phone sensors is totally not a IOIO-related thing. The Android developer site is your friend. It has great documentation and example code. I'm sure getting location is dead simple.
Have no idea whether this is doable from IOIOScript, but there are others on this list more qualified to answer that.

On Feb 22, 2013 3:46 PM, "Peter Gaston" <peter....@gmail.com> wrote:
Just received my IOIO to play and downloaded the app - great!    What about access to the phone's GPS?    Should be simple, right?   :)

fyi - I'm a mentor at my local high school where we do lots of robotics.    Now we're doing something called Sailbot (www.sailbot.org).    My goal is for simple hardware (i.e., IOIO - though we have Arduino already working) as well as a 'as simple as appropriate' way to program.    Clearly we can go whole hog w/ eclipse/Java - though I'll spend most of my time debugging the tools environment rather than helping the kids think about how to code 'sailing'.    (Also looked at 'app inventor' - cute, but seems more a toy than a solid tool...)     So IOIOScript looks amazing!    (And the remote PC communication including streaming is just icing.)    So I'm jazzed.

Except I need GPS.

I'm sure I could add access to the phone's GPS quite easily... I should be finishing the motion detection stuff I'm working on today and then I'll get right on to accessing the GPS.

I like the sound of your sailbot project...it sounds like great fun!   I'm working on a very simple PC based dev environment for IOIOScript which should make it easier to write IOIOScript programs for those with smaller phones. (hop over to the IOIOScript google group if you have any ideas/comments to make)

Also...since you're into robotics, don't forget you can control Lego Mindstorms from IOIOScript too.  You could make some awesome Lego Mindstorm projects combining Mindstorms + IOIO board !

Hi, Regarding the video streaming format... You quite right, I should make it work using standard IP camera protocols.... it's something I need to look into.

But you can also send and receive commands to the phone from the Windows PC too.  So that would not be available in a browser....hmmm...unless I implemented a basic web server in the phone.  Maybe I could do that.  ( Why don't you open a topic on the IOIOScript google group, since were getting a bit IOIOScript specific for this group )

Thanks - GPS will be great!    Also the PC based dev environment!

Btw, Here's my story on how I'd like to use IOIOScript:
  • One module for us is some Javascript code that is the real-time interface to the IOIO board (and probably the orientation/GPS sensors.)    We'll wrap that with some testing and alignment code.
    • Your app is perfect for that
  • The other piece is the algorithms behind how to sail the boat.     This will be more code and will change a lot.   We'll probably build a simulator in a richer web page so we can test and develop -- and especially so we can use a debugger in the browser.
    • A clean path to upload code from Windows to IOIOScript is needed, e.g., your PC based dev environment should be great!
    • Logging from IOIOScript would be great - like directly to the Android log
    • Doesn't sound possible, but any way to debug would be icing - but I'm really not sure it's that useful on a phone UI.
  • Everything else is pizzazz.   I see your stuff as a great prototyping tool and possibly useful as the final platform.    You shouldn't kill yourself too much, say on replicating the Android UI area.    Though that said, as someone mentioned earlier, built-in sliders would be great.
  • Oh yeah, and we're hoping to replicate the windows side that you built for Lego Mindstorms, i.e., add a joystick controller or something.    (Btw, we don't use lego mindstorms because I didn't think to look at it.    Also, a little, possibly incorrect view is that the kids might not like a mindstorm as the 'brain' when all the other high schools and colleges are using arduino and even fancier 'brains'.     also btw, this has been a long path getting to a good hw/sw configuration.  I started out, among many things trying to use PhoneGap so I could code Javascript on a phone communication via bluetooth to our arduino -- but the bluetooth plugin in phonegap didn't seem to work...)
Sorry for the long winded response!

Access to the phones sensors and capabilities through a simple scripting language would open up greater possibilities... Arduino opened up building physical things for a lot of people...now as smart phones takeover and more and more people have smart phones, being able to build physical projects using a smart phone would engage more people... even those that got left out of arduino because of the electronics... the only concern should be keeping IOIOScript as simple as possible yet making it powerful...

Hi Prakash, Yes my philosophy has always been is exactly as you suggest "keep it simple yet powerful".  You can already access the phone's motion sensors, light sensor, camera and compass using Javascript... and I'm doing GPS right now.

Peter:  I'm not sure exactly what you mean by sliders...but you can already use the standard Android Seek Bar (check out the LED Dimmer example), I just forgot to document that control.  In fact there are quite a few things which IOIOScript can do that I have not got round to documenting yet.

Regarding logging.  IOIOScript already logs to the Android log, you just need to filter on the tag "Nxt"  (I'll probably change that tag later).

Regarding editing: I write my javascript samples using Notepad++ and run a batch file which calls ADB "push" command to copy my scripts to the phone.

Regarding lego:  Anything you see my Mindstorms apps (NxtCamera and NxtRemote) doing, you can do in IOIOScript but their might be a few minor code changes to make in your javascript. (for example using the compass or speech systhesis). Let me know if you need example code.

I'm planning to add some computer vision functionality for those that want to make walking/talking robots and I've just finished with a very basic motion detection function which I will release for people to try on the IOIOScript group today.

Hi Guys,

Just to clarify... you only need the IOIO Manager software (written by Ytai) installed because of a bug in some versions of the IOIO board which look for the app when USB is connected.  You do not need it running...in fact, if you have any other IOIO apps running you will probably block the functioning of IOIOScript (especially if you are using Bluetooth).  So I suggest you  try the IOIOScript bluetooth sample again without running other IOIO apps.

Regarding the API differences:  There are some small differences in the names and parameters of API calls between the Java API's and Javascript API's.  This is necessary partly because of the differences between Java and Javascript and partly because the JavaScript API's need to be simpler to use and allow defaulting (leaving out) of some optional parameters.  I do however try to keep them as similar as possible.

You can find an online version of the docs here:-   http://www.filewrench.com/ioioscript/docs/

But I can't find the pictures in the filesystem. Could you tell me where to look for them?

I have a doubt because my "Google Phone" has no SD-Card slot. Perhaps that could make some trouble.

Hi Roy,

If you look at the top of the script, you will see that is sets a variable called 'snapFolder' to '/sdcard/Snaps'.  As long as this is a valid path on your phone then you should find the photos there.

Regards
David.

Exciting news for all you Gadget freaks out there.... The latest beta of IOIOScript now supports the Sony SmartWatch !

Now you can control your IOIOScript programs remotely over Bluetooth at a range of 10 meters or more, using your
Sony SmartWatch (2nd Generation only).

I got mine to work at 30 meters in an open plan office :)

Check this site to see if your phone is compatible (works brilliantly with my Galaxy S3):-
