Bluetooth connection to devices over IOIO UART ports

Hi,

I have connected my IOIO to NOOK (rooted...) to have accessible some external equipment.

e-ink is perfectly visible in full sunlight so I don't neet to explain why I did so :-) I hope.

I would like to connect to IOIO also bluetooth interface - not for communication with host Android (it works perfectly) - but for communication with equipment.

Seems to be quite easy - I found UART (TTL) to bluetooth and I am almost ready to go but...

Am I right that bluetooth connected to Android host should be recognized automatically, so I will be able to connect to my external device, that has non configurable bluetooth password like "1234"?

Sorry, I don't understand your explanation. Can you provide an organized description of what's connected to what and what you want to achieve with that?

1. i have Android tablet without bluetooth. this tablet is extended with IOIO connected to USB.
2. to Port UART3 of IOIO i connected UART to Bluetooth Adapter and would like to pairt it with external slave. i know the name, address and pairing code of this external device.
What I cannot do it is the setup of bluetooth on Android device.

Sorry for the delay.

By "UART to Bluetooth Adapter" you can mean two different things:

1. A Bluetooth devices that exposes itself as a SPP (serial port) device over Bluetooth and transparently sends UART data to the Bluetooth host. Something like a "wireless FTDI cable".
2. A general purpose Bluetooth controller that uses an HCI protocol over UART.

Which one is it?

What is the remote BT device you're talking to?

And last: why don't you use the Bluetooth on the Android directly instead of going through the IOIO / UART / Bluetooth?

Thank you for your kind response.

We are using IOIO board as an extension for glider navigation computers. All devices there communicate with UART, transmit and/or receive NMEA sequences. 

In some cases they can use Bluetooth (like modern IGC LXNav Nano...) however in this case I am not sure which protocol they use (I need to check!) and I assumed it is the first one.

In some cases we would like to get rid of cables and add 'bluetooth UART channel' (e.g. EGBT-045MS or similar).

The problem is that in the PDA sometimes you just don't have Bluetooth (yes!) ! 

We adopted Nook Simple Touch reader to work with IOIO and then Nano, SN10B and other glider devices. Software: XCSoar (see XCSoar.org ;-) ), that see IOIO and works with it perfectly!

However there is no Bluetooth...

Whey do we use Nook? Because it is based on e-ink that is PERFECTLY visible in direct sunlight - no other technology is like that (for reasonable money of course...).

I find IOIO be a great extension and would love to extend it with Bluetooth technology, in fact yes, to have wireless emulation of UART!

I think I saw somewhere pairs of modules that pretend to be UARTs on both sides and use BT to talk to each other.

Search eBay for Bluetooth UART and you'll see some of them.

Yes, they do. I'll follow on this topic as it is very promising. Some pairs are pre-configured to be master-slave and work only between themselves, but chip and micro-board is also available for open access (can be programmed). Would be really great to have something like this as an option or just on your great IOIO! Cheers, Maciej
