writing firmware on new PIC24

I'm a electrical engineering student and I have to write the IOIO-code on my PIC24FJ256GB206. I tried to clone the code on github but it no matter what I do it keeps giving me errors. Can someone point me into the right direction?
i use
Debugger: PicKit4
microcontroller: PIC24FJ256GB206
version: MPLAB x IDE v6.10
compiler: xc16
