Hello,

I just noticed that the Iodide Github README https://github.com/iodide-project/iodide now says that Iodide is no longer under development nor maintained. Which took me quite by surprise, we have started using it for teaching and were very excited about the possibilities, especially for creating interactive scientific visualization tools.

So this is very sad news. Has there been an official announcement? I'm wondering what the reasons were, and if there could be any way to save the project. Is Pyodide also affected or just the Iodide server part?

All the best,
  Jan

Hi Jan,

No, there has been no official announcement-- this is just a reflection of where the project's been for the past few months (and development had slowed down quite a bit before then). Speaking just for myself, I can probably still be persuaded to review small, well-written PRs that don't risk product integrity (we still use Iodide inside Mozilla for a few things) -- it's just unlikely you'll see any large-scale feature development from Mozilla. As such, we felt it best to make this clear up front.

This only applies to the iodide server, pyodide (python-on-webassembly) development continues separately.

There are a number of other efforts in this space, I'd particularly point to starboard notebooks (https://starboard.gg) as an exciting new effort that is also free software.

Will
