In certain areas it may be appropriate to consider alternative food production systems. One of these options is to produce vegetables, herbs and fish in a single system. This can be accomplished using very low cost, salvaged materials and a little electric power for a small pump.

In this model vegetables and herbs are raised in a hydroponics system which is fertilized and watered by the recirculated water from a fish tank.  One person doing part time work can raise enough vegetables and herbs along with protein for one family.  One a small amount of space is needed, even indoors if necessary.

Travis Hughey prepared this manual and gives it away online. He is currently in Kenya teaching people to produce Tilapia and catfish in systems such as these.  We have similar designed systems being installed in schools in Colorado, USA as demonstration projects.
