Dear Friends

I have joined an ARC Contest to respond to the call for ideas that
address fundamental problems of agricultural development and rural
poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa; and especially women, the rural poor
and the needs of rural communities. My project is in Kenya and
entitled : "The Ndekero Challenge: A Systems Approach for Rabbit
Keeping by a Rural Community in Partnership with a Commercial Rabbit
Farm"

ARC will pick 40 projects (out of hundreds) based on popularity voting
and forward them to a panel of judges who will decide on 1 for the
grand prize of 20,000 US$. To be short-listed, I need your votes.
Please help.

Instructions on how to vote is in
http://www.globetree.org/africa/rabbit-net/arc-endorse.htm

The Ndekero Challenge currently has two components.

(A) The first component is the establishment of a rabbit colony
farm and integrated it with fish farming.
This is the Phase 2 project of a project funded by the Swedish
Catholic Church
See Phase 1 in
http://www.globetree.org/africa/ndekero/
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2111&id=100000175854706
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=113672&id=600466082.

The Phase 2 farm will produce 1200 kg of rabbit meat and 1500 kg of
fish per year. Income will provide part-time employment to 10 poor
parents of school children with high drop-out risks. See schematic
diagram for farm in
http://www.globetree.org/africa/ndekero/ibs-ndekero-ws.jpg

(B) The ARC component is for the rural community and proposes an approach
where 50 families can raise rabbits and partner with the colony farm.

PLEASE VOTE........thanks

regards

Prof Orskov, I would like to express my admiration for your projects as shown on your fine web page. The world is a better place due to your work I am sure.

Perhaps there is a way we can assist you with our small energy sysgtems.  We can produce clean gas via gasification which can be used to fuel an electric generator, a water pump, or a cook stove.  We can also make a fair supply of clean, distilled water with our surplus heat.  For fuel we can use animal manure, garbage, wood waste, tires, or even coal if necessary.  In many places of the world 5 kW of electricity can make a lot of difference. 1 MW can power a village or an industrial complex.

Dera Niel Thanks for your complements there is so much to learn one thing that we can say for sure that our western systems of fossil fuel driven monoculture supported by herbicides and pesticides is not sustainable . I have seen gassification in Vietnam and Cambodia In fact I am going there next months . I  did a film for BBC on total resouce management in Vietnam, where human and animal manure from small farms feed into a plastic tube to produce biogas for home cooking the slurry feed into fish ponds to fertilize plankton and the water eventually used for irrigation . I can send the cd to you if you are interested. So much to learn  we just need to have our eyes wide open. not closed as we have tended to do in the west .
On my small farm here in Scotland I have a 2.5kw windmill!   I am alwauys interested in technologies that can be used by poor farmers and not patented by large multinationals  I could name a few. If you like a cd please send the address Best regards bob

Dear Bob,

The work your are showing below is mainly the work of Reg Preston. Please look at http://www.lrrd.org  and you will get the electronic link to all the work you are mentioning .
He and we have done a lot of work in SE-Asia, despite the opposition from researchers from your country and Europe. This is why SE-Asia is a lot better of than Africa.
Best of luck and wishes

I respond to a letter from Jacky Foo I get a reply from Neil i reply to his letter and get reply from you.! I must try to be a member  .
The small paper I wrote seem to be ok but what exactly is the system. Will Monsato read it too! I am sorry i had some problem in downloading My it department downloaded it on their computer which meant I am sure I could not get it on mine Best regards Bob

Hi Horst/Bob/All ;

If anyone is visiting Cambodia, we have Mercedes van for rent for all your travel arrangments, income from van rental would help us a lot.  Please be invited to visit our project in Battambang province.  We are just reaching self sufficiency in growing all our own food for orphan center with 30 children plus farm staff.  Jacky has been here long time before, we have made much progress since that time. A rabbit project and biogas would be very interesting for us.  Driver speaks fluent english.

I hope that all members at this IBS forum will also vote for the
project.

I have been helping schools and children's Home with vulnerable
children in Kenya in 2008
http://www.globetree.org/africa/rabbit-net.

I am very happy to inform you and IBS forum members that NTV Kenya (21
September 2009) released on YouTube a news clip on rabbit meat in
Gilgil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTuMoosJSQk).

My future work plan currently has 2 proposals. The first is the rabbit-
fish system that can generate 100 kg of meat every month from a 1-acre
rabbit colony at a 30 acre farm of the Nazareth Sisters. The second
proposal is the theme for the ARC contest (entitled "The Ndekero
Challenge: A Systems Approach for Rabbit Keeping by a Rural Community
in Partnership with a Commercial Rabbit Farm").

To Bob, if I get the official answer on funding from the Swedish
Catholic Church, I will get back to you. I have a community project
idea for school children to create an allotment garden beside the fish
"canal" so that they can grow fruits for their school lunch. see
photos in http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2111&id=100000175854706

The children generally get a lunch of boiled beans and maize and this
is already a good meal for most of them.
(see http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=62541&id=100000175854706) .

I have a e-forum at http://arc.peacecorpsconnect.org/view/653 .....
please join this forum with your feedbacks and comments on the project
idea.

Hi Neal
Ndekero (my project site for 2010) has no electricity, no piped water
but has mobile phone network. It is more populated than Peter G's
place in Cambodia (and more rainfall too) but basic issues are much
the same.

The school has 200 children and serves lunch and tea during school
days and uses firewood as fuel. Your gasifier can also produce biochar
which I like to have for soil improvements. I would certainly like to
have a gasifier firstly to reduce the amount of wood used for cooking.
It is also high time that a demonstration of gasifiers is done in
Kenya as most boarding schools use wood as fuel because commercial gas
is too expensive.

Q: can one unit volume of wood give more cooking time if it goes to a
gasifier first ??

Jacky, a gasifier is an exceedingly simple device, The art of if is in metering the wood gas into an engine to replace gasoline or diesel fuel. Even this is a matter of listening to the engine needs as it works.

The web page cited below is not ours but it shows a series of steps in building a gasifier capable of producing about 25 kW of electricity. Local fabricators can produce these units.  Some parts can even be made of baked clay.

We are most interested in being of assistance to your project. Perhaps the do it yourself option would be the economical route.  If you need any parts for the units the company on the web page will sell you individual parts. Or we can work on other options for you.
Neal

gas can not explode without air. The gas if produced in an oxygen deprived environment inside the unit.  The gas production consumes what little air is present. So in order to combust (explode) the gas you have to add air to it.  This makes it pretty safe.

Let me know when you are ready.

Hi Jacky ;

They had babies a few times but of course no one knows how to take care of them.  Babies died and eventually the rabbits died too. There are some key points which I learned during the seminar that no one knew.  I am not surprised it failed first time.  Will try again when I can locate some more rabbits.

Yes, each person is entitled one vote. Some people dont have email
addresses nor easy access to Internet.

You can help to create a one-time account for a person (e-g. at
www.hushmail.com) and vote on her/his behalf. If you can help some
friends this way, it would be great.

A new email account is needed for such people who dont have any
existing email account.
This is a straight forward assistance. You are helping a neighbour or
a friend to vote.

In the second case, you have a person who has an email address to
vote... for that person it takes extra effort and money (out of their
routine) to check his/her email. This may be the case in countries
where people may need to go to an internet cafe. (as in Kenya or
Uganda).

If a friend has internet access at work or at home, I would think it
is fair that a person with limited access could ask this friend to
vote on her/his behalf. It is not necessary to give the password.
Instead the friend with internet access can create a one-time email
account just to make the vote.

GOOD NEWS

"The Ndekero Challenge" project idea has won 1st Place in Round 4 of
the Africa Rural Connect Competition! $3,000 will be awarded towards
the implementation of this project.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND ENDORSEMENT OF THE PROJECT,
AND THE WINNING IS ALL BECAUSE OF YOU WHO ENDORSED THE PROJECT.

Join me to celebrate this happy moment and to pray for the next and
final round which can ensure the first rabbit colony farm in Kenya and
that aims to produce at least 100 rabbits per month.

The 3,000 US$ will be used as the first step to develop partnership
between the families/community and the rabbit farm. The objective is
to connect the families to the market.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The top 20 of the 40 Round Winners will be nominated to the final
round for a chance to win the $20,000 grand prize. The Grand Prize
winner will be selected by ARC's Panel of Judges and the winner will
be announced in early December. :-))

So.... keep your fingers crossed for the project again.
Thanks
