why did you close the operation that sells 20,000 pounds crayfish a
year from May through October.

Dear Jacky:

The purpose of "double cropping" crayfish with fresh water mussels or fresh water clams is four fold:

1) The mussels or clams provide water filtration, thus augmenting the submersable propeller aeration system I have from the Powerhouse. These aerators are in each of the ponds (great aeration system by the way).
2) The mussels or clams are sessile, and do not get up and walk away, like crayfish do.
3) My income per acre should increase, if I have 2 aquaculture products per acre instead of just one.
4) The crayfish eat rotting vegetable matter (detritus) and the clams or mussels filter small zooplankton from the water, so they do not compete for food.

I have no idea if the crayfish will eat the mussles or clams, and I have no idea if one species may harbor a parasite that may infect the other.

That is why I would like your membership to share with me their experiences with this concept.

Many thanks.  Nelson (Nelson Hendler, MD, MS).

Hi Jacky,

Can Nelson Hendler provide some technical information  on their crayfish rearing project. How are the ponds constructed? what is used in feeding the crayfish?, any articifial system to control water conditions? are there specialized organs providing the young crayfish at the initial stage of the project?. This project sounds lucrative and can be promoted in coastal areas of Cameroon where over fishing has greatly reduced the availability of sea products with prices sky rocketing including that crayfish.

Such a pond system is excellent for a further water purifying system
of the Folkewall type, thus makinga an extra purifying and providing
extra vegetables for feed or to be sold /eaten as vegetables. The
surplus nutrients from the crayfish and mussels are used as plant
nutrients. Using charcoal in the plant beds will improve the
utilisation even better.
