I am now trying to find sites and people who are interested to apply the
"Ndekero Model" in Sub-Sahara African countries.
If you have a site, please describe your site....
If you know of someone who might be interested, please invite the
person to join this discussion.
The basic requirements for the model is access to 1 acre (4000 m2) of land (or
more) for the rabbit colony farm. A source of water will be needed for
integration with fish farming.
The Ndekero Model currently has three project components.
(P.S: as an integrated system, it is a dynamic system and other/many
sub-components can be added also)
(A) The first component is the establishment of a rabbit colony
farm (and integrated it with fish farming).
This is the Phase 2 of a project (Phase 1) that was funded by the Swedish
Catholic Church. See work from Phase 1 in

The Phase 2 farm will produce 1200 kg of rabbit meat and 1500 kg of
fish per year. Income will provide part-time employment to 10 poor
parents of school children with high drop-out risks. See schematic
diagram for farm in

(B) The ARC component (The Ndekero Challenge) is for the rural community and
proposes an approach where 50 families can raise rabbits and partner with the
rabbit colony farm.

(C) A third component is the use of the area around the fish canals since water
is available. For Ndekero and since there is a school, the idea is to involve
the children to grow fruit trees (e.g. papaya) and other stuffs for their school
lunches. In another site if there is no school, an allotment garden could be
created for the local community to take advantage of the nutrient-rich water
generated by fish farming.
