Virtually no one in the professional ethanol industry accepts the university reports claiming that ethanol consumes more energy than it produces.  The reports are the fantasy products of naysayers who make a living from sensationalism via degradation.

 

Additionally, the food vs fuel debate is a product of the media not reality.  Ethanol from corn, for example, does not put us in an either/or situation since the byproducts of ethanol production are also excellent feed ingredients as was the corn originally.  The increase in corn prices in the USA, for example, are the results of speculators and investment groups not ethanol. The price increases have resulted in the net increase in the prices of Mexican tacos of less than 1/10 of one cent each.

 

Regarding alternative sources of ethanol production there appear to be a host of non-food options which can be pursued given the proper motivation.  We would be pleased to explore those with anyone interested.

One important thing to consider is the energy balance for different
options for ethanol production, as some figures suggest more energy is
used in production than the resulting ethanol contains.

The food/fuel debate is also important! What will the ethanol be
derived
from and what resources will be needed for this?

So if I gave you 1 litre of ethanol (or maybe 1000 gallons or so to
allow for some advantages of scale!) you could till, fertilise, plant,
irrigate, spray with herdicides and insecticides, harvest, transport and
process enough corn/crop to produce more than 1 litre (1000 gal) of
ethanol and the replacement seed - all with NO fossil energy/electricity
(sunlight IS an allowed addition)! Are there any energy balances
available on ethanol production facilities, as the crop side can be
estimated fairly well?

With the continuing demand for energy I can't see that energy production
is independent of food supply, as we have only a finite (and limited)
amount of resources. Then there will be more ethanol used in
processing/distrubuting the secondary products to further reduce the
amount of ethanol available for uses other than growing ethanol crops.

In addition, since corn that has been used for ethanol
production is only good as an animal feed, there will
be way too much beef, pork, etc. on the market as more
and more ethanol is used in cars. A happy day for meat
eaters, it seems (don't get me wrong, I also like a
steak from time to time).

I think the discussion suggested by Paul is very
valid, but unfortunately, I won't be able to make too
much of an input.
