Bernard (Dov) Spolsky (1932-2022) A Wellingtonian educated at Wellington College (1943-1948), Dov Spolsky received a BA and MA (Honours) from the University of New Zealand, and then, following a teaching diploma, spent several years teaching in schools around New Zealand. In 1966 he was awarded a PhD from the Université de Montréal, and in 2008, a Hon D. Litt from his old university, Victoria University of Wellington. Dov taught at McGill and Indiana universities before becoming Professor of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico. From 1980 until 2000 he was Professor of English at Bar Ilan University, and until his death Emeritus Professor of Linguistics there. Professor Spolsky was a noted international authority on sociolinguistics, language testing, and educational linguistics, and the author of Language Policy (2004), and The Languages of the Jews: A Sociolinguistic History (2013), among many other publications. For those who did not have the pleasure of listening to him in Israel or in Wellington, you can watch Dov’s lecture: When does a language of the Jews become a Jewish language?
