The supplements and their integration into the second edition were a great improvement to the OED as a whole, but it was recognized that most of the entries were still fundamentally unaltered from the first edition. Much of the information in the dictionary published in 1989 was already decades out of date, though the supplements had made good progress towards incorporating new vocabulary. Yet many definitions contained disproven scientific theories, outdated historical information, and moral values that were no longer widely accepted.[48][49] Furthermore, the supplements had failed to recognize many words in the existing volumes as obsolete by the time of the second edition's publication, meaning that thousands of words were marked as current despite no recent evidence of their use.[50]

We learn vocabulary by immersion and through regular repetition and usage. If you would like to develop your general vocabulary try reading widely, like a good quality newspaper or magazine in your field.

Communicative Development Inventories (CDIs) are tools for measuring vocabulary size and growth. These vocabulary 'checklists' have a long history in the study of language development. CDI studies at the Oxford University BabyLab employ a UK CDI to measure standardized vocabulary score in the local UK population, and to model growth as a function of age (see below). You can try out the Online CDI Tool to find out how many of our standard test-words your child understands. An alternative approach uses statistical modelling to estimate the possible size of a toddler's total vocabulary, based on a CDI score. You can try out the online Vocabulary Size Estimator.

A summary of these data is given below, in the graphs showing vocabulary size by age. The graphs show how the number of words produced and understood by children changes as a function of children's age. These graphs were generated from the OCDI Database by taking a moving average across 20 children.

If they are reading fiction, they might be reading interesting descriptions. If they are reading non-fiction, they will be reading key topic words. If your child reads a wide range of different types of books, they will come across a wide range of vocabulary.

Work on a more substantial supplement began in 1957. This new Supplement was published in four volumes between 1972 and 1986. It included "much new information on the language (especially on twentieth century vocabulary)". It also added more scientific and technical terms as well as broadened its scope "to include considerably more words from North America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, South Asia, and the Caribbean".

One of the most effective ways of expanding your vocabulary is to hear the language being spoken by a native. There is no better example of a native speaker than someone who has been hired to speak on TV or radio, and their use of language will usually be reflective of the broad sweep of the language. With apps available to allow you to listen to worldwide radio, and a lot of content on YouTube and other platforms, this is a great way to begin.

African American English, with its roots in African languages and creoles, has been a major influence on the development of English vocabulary, particularly in the 20th and 21st centuries. It has long contributed full categories of words and phrases that have had a profound impact on the way that English is used in the United States and worldwide.

The easiest way to build a large vocabulary is by reading every day. Research shows that vocabulary exposure increases with daily reading time. Between kindergarten and Grade 12, students with an average daily reading time of 30+ minutes encounter 13.7 million words in that time frame.

Students who are exposed to more vocabulary words performed better in reading comprehension. Similarly, students who score lower on vocabulary tests also scored lower on reading tests. A large vocabulary is a tool to help your child both understand the ideas of others and communicate their thoughts effectively.

We use a huge technicalvocabulary in science, including science-specific words, scientificinterpretations of everyday terms, and complex logical connectives which areused to link ideas. If you identify the important vocabulary for a specificlesson or topic students will feel less overwhelmed.

Strategies for using talk to widen vocabulary include modelling use ofterminology, playing Just a Minute, and challenging students when they usevague language. For more ideas, take a look at the pack.

Oxford Language Dictionaries Online (OLDO) includes additional resources and tools for learning the Chinese language, including an extensive library of letter templates, vocabulary games, and cultural information.
