Group and no server

1) Can I suggest you just let folks join your google group without
approvals, and set "Messages from new members are moderated". This
would allow someone to come here and post a message, but also let you
moderate out spammers. I manage several groups this way and I rarely
have to "moderate" out spam.

2) Any reason why the app can't talk to a the NXT directly, rather
than through a server? One of my Lego kids brought in an old pocket PC
which could control the NXT directly so we went searching for an
iPhone app, to find yours which appears to work, but only if you have
a PC serving the bluetooth channel.

Or am I missing something??

It has to do with apples restricted bluetooth stack on iOS devices. It's not something you can just get around with different code. Blame apple. This mechanism does work pretty well though!
