Labatt Blue Light Border Cross Concert Series
Labatt Blue Light, The Good Neighborhood, and Buffalo Niagara RIVERKEEPER are teaming up to present the inaugural Blue Light Border Cross, an event representing six Canadian bands over five nights in four Buffalo venues. Blue Light Border Cross celebrates the bond between our two countries and the waters we share, while continuing Buffalo’s great legacy as a gateway city for Canadian artists into the American music scene, with proceeds going to the preservation and protection efforts of Buffalo Niagara RIVERKEEPER.
“Imported daily from Canada, Labatt Blue Light wouldn’t miss the opportunity to help bridge Canadian and American music fans,” said Matt Goldman, Labatt USA customer and field marketing manager. “We’re proud to present these great Canadian bands in Buffalo while supporting the great work of Buffalo Niagara RIVERKEEPER in the process.”
The schedule:
Tues, 2/9, 9:30, Pearl Street Grill & Brewery, $2 - Melting Pot (Rock/Soul-Toronto)
Wed, 2/10, 8:00, Croc Bar, $3 - the Waxbills (Rock-Niagara Falls)
Thu, 2/11, 8:00, Sportsmens Tavern, $10 - Lee Harvey Osmond ("Acid folk"-Hamilton)
Fri, 2/12, 9:30, Pearl Street Grill & Brewery, $5 - the Royal Crowns (Rockabilly-Toronto)
Sat, 2/13, 9:30, Mohawk Place, $5 - King Roller/Super Stack (Alt. Country-Kitchener-Waterloo/Southern rock-Sudbury)
With the series bookended by Buffalo Sabres home games, Labatt Blue Light is providing Sabres tickets and other items to be raffled off each night by Buffalo Niagara RIVERKEEPER.
We will be needing volunteers to sell raffle tickets and answer general questions about RIVERKEEPER at the venues. Also, we will be needing brave souls to stand outside HSBC arena after the Sabres game Tuesday, 2/9, to promote the concert series. If you're interested in volunteering, please contact Adrienne at ak...@bnriverkeeper.org or 852-7483.
Plantasia Garden and Landscape Show, March 25-28, 2010
Celebrate Spring with us at Plantasia! Riverkeeper will have a table set up at Plantasia again this year, and we would like a few volunteers to lend a hand at the table, talk about rain barrels, and rally people to volunteer for our Spring Cleanup 2010. Plantasia is a four-day event, running from 10AM – 9PM on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and from 10AM – 5PM on Sunday, so if you can help out on any of these days, it would be extremely helpful. We will be arranging shifts, so you can volunteer your time for only a few hours if you cannot give your whole day. Volunteers get free admission so you can view the show before/after helping us out! If you can help out, please contact Brad at bkuj...@bnriverkeeper.org. Thank you!
Interested in Becoming an Eco-Tour Guide?
Want to share your love of Buffalo and educate your fellow community members about Buffalo’s unique environmental heritage? That’s great, because we need you! Buffalo Niagara RIVERKEEPER is again partnering with Buffalo Tours and Roycroft Campus Corporate for docent training. Trainees will go through a five-session course to develop their tour guiding and public speaking skills while increasing their knowledge of Buffalo’s architectural and environmental history. Following Buffalo Tours trainings, RIVERKEEPER will provide specialized trainings to further develop the Eco-Tour guides so they are ready to lead paddling tours around Strawberry Island and Cayuga Creek, hiking tours at Niagara Gorge, and biking tours along the Niagara River, along with other programs that are in development.
Registration is open NOW through Buffalo Tours, and there is a one-time fee of $75 to cover the cost of training materials, lectures, and meeting space (scholarships are available if economic assistance is needed.) To register please call 716-852-3300 or email in...@buffalotours.org as soon as possible and before February 5th, 2010. Trainings will be held on Saturday mornings from 9:30 am to 12:30pm, beginning February 13th.
Save the Date--the Spring Shoreline Cleanup is Coming!
RIVERKEEPER’s Spring Shoreline Cleanup on April 17th will kickoff Earth Week events around Western New York and is crucial to the protection of our waters. Please mark the date in your calendar and ask everyone you know to do the same! More details to come for site captains and volunteers in our next E-Newsletter!
We are in need of SITE CAPTAINS! In this position you will be in charge of a clean-up site, meaning you will inform the volunteers of their duties, pass out the supplies that RIVERKEEPER has provided, be sure everything goes smoothly and lastly direct the volunteers to the after-cleanup appreciation picnic! If you are interested in this fun volunteer position, please contact Adrienne Kina, ak...@bnriverkeeper.org
We are looking for NEW CLEANUP SITES for the upcoming Spring Cleanup, and would like your input. If you know of a location that could use some TLC or has trash, littler, debris, floaters, etc., please let us know ASAP. You can contact Adrienne at ak...@bnriverkeeper.org or Brad at bkuj...@bnriverkeeper.org or call us at 716-852-7483.

Green Expo at Galleria
We will be needing volunteers to help on Saturday, 4/17 from 9:30-6 at the Walden Galleria at the Green Expo. This is an exhibition for environment organizations to showcase their projects and influence in the community. Volunteers will be helping with our Paint the Rain Green display: a rain barrel painting contest for local schools and also manning our RIVERKEEPER table. Please contact Adrienne Kina, ak...@bnriverkeeper.org for further details or to sign up!
Do You Have a Rain Barrel Yet?
Rain barrels are available for immediate pickup upon purchase from our Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper world headquarters at 1250 Niagara Street in Buffalo. They come in a variety of colors (gray, green, and dark brown) and are only $99.95 each (+tax). With spring just around the corner, a rain barrel is the must-have for every gardener. A 10% discount applies to a purchase of 10 barrels or more, so get all your gardening friends together for a grand purchase. For more information see our webpage or call (716) 852-7483 and ask for either Adrienne or Brad.
Thanks to an EPA grant, RIVERKEEPER is able to donate 161 rain barrels to high visibility sites, such as schools, community gardens, churches, libraries and low-income residents.
