Hello all,

I have been out of the loop with the Open Space group for quite some time.  I’m not sure whether the group is still meeting, but I just received a message from our OS trainer, Michael Herman, who says that the InvitingBuffalo website has expired.

Does anyone have interest in keeping the site up?

Best,

Rebekah

Hi Rebekah,
I attended one of the last meetings and only six or so people were there- Marilyn Gallivan, Laura Fitzgerald, Yuri H, Norm Bakos, Kevin Hayes, Dave Granville, and myself. I think it fell apart shortly after that. Marilyn tried hard to keep it going but only two people showed up to the next meeting. Clearly it died from lack of interest.

Rebekah,

I'm sorry to report that I think that the group has officially dismantled.  Marilyn and I did want to keep it going but everyone else seemed to have conflicts in their schedules.  It is very sad though.  I miss everyone and was really excited about the potential that both the group and the website could provide to the community.  I think that it is fair to tell Michael Herman (weird to hear from him now since I actually thought I saw him in a crowd last week in Chicago) that the website can officially expire.  Feel free to check with Dave Granville officially though.  I believe that his department funded it and city hall.

Take care!

Huh? The group has been officially dismantled? Uh no... Lack of interest, I am not so sure because people are responding. Lack of resources and leadership... most likely.  This was a sanctioned social volunteer network from the start that was sanctioned by a former city hall official. The official is now in Baltimore, I think. As long as everyone is aware of this resource and the google listserv, the social volunteer network, which is now unsanctioned without that official's blessing, still exists if people use it appropriately for its original intent (for OST meetings and recruitment). Granville is still around, but has been re-allocated into a different department.

Who carries the charge of OST and is willing to endure the disppointment of people not showing up repeatedly to meetings? Who is willing to divide the responsibility of organizing the group and manage the tasks voluntarily?

As long as this listserv is open, its members pay attention, its members are responsive to calls for assistance and here in Buffalo, the group, though neither as organized nor as supported, still realistically remains. OST has simply changed, which is the essence of its sustainability.

Warmest regards,

Aaron

Keep the listserve open. At the very least, keep the list so someone can revive it in the future. Many constraints have kept us from coordinating recently. Best. -yuri

Thank you all for your input.  As far as I know, this listserv will not be dissolved.  So let’s keep using it for OST meetings as needed.

Thank you,

Rebekah

I've asked Mike Herman what the cost would be to renew the domains for
one year. I'm guessing around $35. I'm completely willing to pay for
this extension.

This will allow us to keep the website operating. The alternative is
to let the domain registrations expire. If that happens, we would
almost certainly be unable to use the invitingbuffalo.* domain names
in the future.

It seems to me, whatever the group decides to do about sustaining Open
Space in Buffalo, that retaining the domain names is the only sensible
option at this point.

Hello Everyone,

Unfortunately I too was unable to attend meetings or commit any time, but my circumstances have changed and I see value  in reorganizing the group.

I am willing to contribute to the cost of renewing the domain name, as well as working with others in recruiting new members.

I have renewed the domain names and the hosting account.

The invitingbuffalo.com website is back up. I've taken over control of the domains and hosting from Mike Herman. Thanks, Mike, for your help and for taking care of this up to now.

It was a close call - the domain registrar and hosting company could have pulled the plug and it would have cost a lot to bring it back up under that name.

I have no problem paying for this but will accept small donations from those who wish to share the load. I'll report later on how much it cost and what we can expect in yearly costs if we continue running the website.

I spent $90 to renew the domains invitingbuffalo.com, .org, .net and .info for one year. These are the domains Brian Reilly registered in late 2008.

I also renewed the hosting account at GoDaddy.com for one year. This pays for the server that houses the website.

If we do this again, it would cost $90/year, or $7.50/month.

We could reduce costs by:

Registering only .org or perhaps .org and .com. This could save $30 or so.

Moving the hosting to another server. I have a hosting account and could donate, without any problem whatever, hosting as needed, no charge. I already do this for about twenty websites. This could save $40 or so.

If anyone wishes to help me pay for this, email me privately. I'm OK with whatever happens.

I'd be glad to chip in to this.  I lost track of the group when it started using the invitingbuffalo business ..... and I started having problems with my home computer .....  hope we can discuss whether it is still something we think is valuable and how to proceed.
