A step-down ring is required to physically mount the 72mm filter on a lens with a 77mm thread. Since this is a step-down adapter rather than a step-up, the field-of-view of the lens may become partially obstructed, causing severe vignetting or even appearing visible at corners of the frame.
Essentially, there is no pro for doing this, only downsides because you are losing part of your image. Even when you crop the blocked-out corners, you have lost resolution and angle-of-view. The same can happen when use the wrong lens hood is used on a lens, even though it may fit the bayonet.
The amount of vignetting that occurs depends on the lens used and the set focal-length in case of the zoom. It could be the case that no vignetting occurs at all if the lens does not need that wide a filter. Generally though, a certain filter-size is chosen because that is needed to avoid obstructing the lens but manufacturers also round up to common sizes to avoid forcing users to buy an excessive number of filters and line up with common filter sizes, although there are lenses which take filters in half-milimetre sizes too, presumably to be as compact as possible.
With a zoom lens, there is additional complexity that usually causes the filter size to be sufficient for the widest angle but more than enough towards the telephoto end. This is not true of all lenses as some zoom internally.

This ProMaster HGX Prime VND filter mounts to lenses with 72mm threads and provides an exposure reduction of 1.3 to 8 stops (ND2.5-ND256 equivalent). It darkens the entire image allowing for slower shutter speeds and/or wider apertures with applications for both still photography and videography.
Mechanical "hard" stops at each end of the filter's range prevent bypassing the minimum or maximum useable density. A small, knurled knob provides a tactile experience making it easier to rotate the filter quickly and smoothly, simply by touch. This Tactile Control Knob is removable if you prefer not to use it.
White lines on the filter's ring indicate its density setting at each full stop. These lines represent specific densities of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 stops with 1.3 and 8 stops being achieved at each end of the filter ring's range of travel (MIN and MAX positions).
An additional "X" mark on the filter's ring indicates the density point at which cross polarization (X pattern) begins, slightly, to visually appear when using most wide-angle lenses (a phenomenon common to all VND filters).

I have read about people having issues putting filters on the Canon L100-400 that you lose your sharpness and others say they do not have a problem with it. The one thing people seem to agree on is to get a good brand of filter and B&H filters are brought up, but I went to their site and looked for B7H branded filters in 72mm and 77mm and I did not see any. I am looking for a polarizing and a neutral density filter for both lenes but mainly for the L. I am going to Alaska next year they should help with bluer skies and toning down the brightness. So, anyone have favorite Brands or specific filters they recommend. This should not mater but in case it does I have a T7i Camera and currently only the Tamron has a UV filter on it by HOYA, the L100-400 does not.
