to Introduction to PHP, Jan-Apr 2011, Matt's Section
Hi everyone, and welcome to Matt's Section of Introduction to PHP!

Thanks for the great effort everyone showed in their sign up tasks.
I'm really looking forward to course, and I hope you are too.

As I send this message, it is actively become January 26 across the
east coast of the United States. Europe is likely asleep and Asia is
either just waking up or has already begun January 26 in full force.
Although January 26, and with it the official beginning of this round
of School of Webcraft courses, won't begin for me for another 5 hours
or so, I realize that for most you, it has. So, welcome to the first
2011 round of School of Webcraft and the first round of Introduction
to PHP!

There are two meetings for our first week, in order to accommodate
everyone's schedules:

The first time is Saturday, January 29 at 9AM HST (http://goo.gl/
cbU5y).
The second time is Sunday, January 30 at 5PM HST (http://goo.gl/
o6pcu).

You can attend one of these meetings, or both of them. The content
will be largely the same, but there will be introductions. Here's
where you can find our first meeting:

https://voxli.com/IkimashoZ (we use this for voice)
http://intro2php-matt-2011-01.titanpad.com/1 (we use this as our
virtual "whiteboard"; password is "intro2php")
Sign in to BOTH of these services at the scheduled time.

If you have any trouble signing into either of these services on the
meeting day, you can find me on Google Talk at the email address
ikim...@gmail.com. I'll help you get in. I recommend trying to
arrive a little early just in case you have trouble. I'll sign into
everything 30 minutes early.

Here's our agenda for the first meeting:

1. Introductions
2. What are our learning goals?
3. Group discussion: What is PHP?
4. School of Webcraft / P2PU Badges: PHP badge, anyone? What do you
think of the badge system?
5. Some basic syntax for beginning assignments.

See you then!

- Matt

Hey,
for the virtual whiteboard link that u mentioned, it's asking me email address. What should i write in that??
I tried my own email address. It didn't work.

Also, i don't have a mic. Do i need to get it for the sessions?

Thanks.

Hi Paresh,

About Titanpad, I'll look into that Friday evening my time.  It might want your email address for verification.  That's probably good.  We want to make sure only our section's participants gets in.  I may need to add you to a list though.  I'll write back when I find out more.

About the microphone, you don't need to run out and buy one.  I'm not going to make you purchase anything for the course.  I'm not even sure voice chat is going to work with twenty people in the chat.  But, you will need headphones or speakers.  If you need to respond, text chat will be available on titanpad.  We want to use voxli just for the voice chat part.  Titanpad has text chat integration, and a nice document area where everyone can type.  It's not the perfect virtual whiteboard, but it will do.
