After doing some research, it seems that Safari will not suppor the
<fileUpload> component.

That's not good for this project, we need a way to upload files
(pictures) to our server.

Does anyone out there have a solution for this issue?

Thanks.

Our sales folks need to upload their sales receipts from their iPad.

Oh...

It seems that Safari Mobile disables this for security reason.

It looks like folks have resorted to jailbreaking their devices so they
can upload. For example:
http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-hacking/41510-upload-all-files-ipad-safari.h
tml

I think you might need to write an iPad app that can browse the file
system. Or, you can have the users email their receipts (like we are able
to do with our expense system).

I read on a post that it cannot browse the iPad file system... Unless the
device is jailbroken (which is not an ideal requirement to run the app).

Emailing is kinda a clunky type solution. They have these cool devices
and we have to tell them to email their receipts. I don't think that's
gonna go over well with them.

I'm thinking maybe a copy and paste type solution? Where maybe an
image stream can be pasted to the form?

I'm researching it now.

This could be a deal breaker for this project.

Concur Expense allows access to the camera roll...its very convenient.

i would ask your Sales Engineer to research any plans for native app-wrapper support for Zen (refer to DMC800).

Otherwise, you might leverage/take advantage of iCloud and pull the images from a machine running iTunes (this might be even nicer if delivered well, since essentially the images would upload when the user synced to iTunes).

OK.

I just tested with TinyMCE and I can do a copy and paste from my iPad
gallery to an RTF field in Zen.

It seems this is the only "smooth" solution I can find.

It might be too much work / "process confusing" to do the iTunes way
or a third party app.

The copy and paste method is something that everybody knows.

They need to have a form that has information like:
1. Client name
2. date
3. amount
4. expense type
5. picture of receipt

We need a simple way to get all this information into a Cache table.

It looks like copy and paste is the simplest method I can find, so we
will explore this solution.

I didn't say email was an ideal solution ;o) but I was thinking of some
way you could mimic the actions the iPad device does allow, like "sharing"
receipt documents that are stored in a "gallery" of images.

I have an app on my iPad that allows me to swap files between my iPad and
its backup (on wireless network) drive: FileBrowser can see local as well
as networked drives. It runs on a non-jailbroken iPad or iPhone. You
might be able to call the same iPad O/S interface.

I agree about Concur's technique. They somehow get to the camera roll.. You "submit" the file then get a screen where it shows up as an image link and can provide more details in the form.

Phonegap is what you need if you want to access APIs such as camera

More info on how a system like Concur works. I'll describe a scenario in
first person:

1. When I set up my ZenRoberto expense system account, I used the option
to set up an InBox for emailing my receipts to. I added all the valid
email addresses I could email my receipts from
(renee...@intersystems.com, renee...@gmail.com,
reneey...@yahoo.com).
2. When I got my receipt from dinner, I wrote some notes on it ("Monday
Jan 16 Dinner"), took a picture of it and emailed the picture to
myi...@ZenRoberto.net. The ZenRoberto system will check the sender email
address (renee...@intersystems.com, renee...@gmail.com,
reneey...@yahoo.com) and match it to my InBox at ZenRoberto system.
3. When I log into the ZenRoberto expense system, my receipt gallery
contains images that I emailed to it. I can select a receipt and generate
an expense item for a report.

By the way, expense systems like Concur have iPad, SmartPhone and
Blackberry app that lets you fill in the fields for the expense item and
send that information along with an image of the receipt. Personally, I'm
not a big fan of those apps because it's so much easier for me to annotate
the receipt ("Dinner Monday"), email a picture of it to my expense system
InBox then log on the system (browser based) and quickly fill in the form
fields... Many of them are prepopulated dropdowns with required fields
like meal attendees, meal type, etc. All in all, I like having the choice
of a handheld-specific app or generic browser-based interface or just
using my email app to send receipt images as attachments until I log on
and do my expenses.

Hope this info is useful,

Ah OK, so it's a third party system/app then.

But then we would have a problem, Sales will ask "why do we need Zen
then?".

I'm pretty sure we can port the data over to our Cache database, but
we want our sales folks to get used to Zen as their interface. And
this would be a great opportunity to introduce the sales folks to it.

I was describing the kind of workflow you could build using Zen... Fairly
typical of expense management systems but some systems do it better than
others ;o)

Hi,
Since file-upload form fields don't work in Mobile Safari a zen web
page could instruct some native application to choose and upload a
photo. I found a free application that seems to do it. I haven't test
it in deep so I can't get into details.
The only con would be that the ipad clients would need to install this
small application.
Check the web picupapp.com, it´s quite interesting the approach they
follow to do the upload and call the native application from the web
app using a custom URL schema.

On the other hand, as a radical different solution, you would convert
your zen application into a native application (or at least the upload
part). You don't need to learn mobile programming and you could use
something like phonegap.com.

It would be very interesting to share the experiences with phonegap
and zen, it´s always I wanted to do but never had the time.

I hope it helps.
Mario

Hi All

Having worked with zen I have found it difficult to integrate with
mobile devices. Mobile devices are not going away. They are becoming a
standard that as a developer you can not ignore.
Images and working with files for upload is something that should be a
lot easier. I have had a number issues that I have not been able to
resolve over the last several months. One problem is how to get photos
from an iPad into cache server using zen so that the process is a
seamless integration. Another problem is how to make sure that image
orientation is correct or can be rotated to the proper position when
displaying on zen page. As I read this post I realize that there are
developers are experiencing the same issues. Though I have thought
about using phone gap I have not had the time to invest. Perhaps it is
the way to go. It would be interesting to hear what others think.

I started looking at Picup when I found this post.
Has anyone tested it and gotten it to work?
I created an html component and put the sample script in it. I get the
choose file button but I am having problems getting the pickup app to
start from a zenPage. I am having a problem getting this javascript
to run. Based on the instructions from pickup.com this needs to be
placed in the starter parameters. I am not sure where this is. I
assumed it could go in the onLoadHandler method.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Add following javascript code to set the starter parameters to launch
the Picup app for image uploading

var currentParams = {}

document.observe('dom:loaded', function(){

$(document.body).addClassName('iphone');

// We'll check the hash when the page loads in-case it was opened in
a new page
// due to memory constraints
Picup.checkHash();

// Set some starter params
currentParams = {
'callbackURL' : 'http://your-website.com/image-process.php',
'referrername' : escape('App Name'),
'referrerfavicon' : escape('http://your-website.com/favicon.ico'),
'purpose' : escape('Select your photo for the our
App.'),
'debug' : 'false',
'returnThumbnailDataURL': 'true',
'thumbnailSize' : '80'
};

Picup.convertFileInput($('photo'), currentParams);

});

This would be a great feature to provide

Thanks

Joe

This PICUP app is bogus.

It seems like it will help us do what we need to do - upload a picture
from your iPad camera roll or take a picture, but it doesn't do
anything.

During testing it sent back a link to where my image was uploaded.
When I checked, it was a picture of a male in a shower naked with a
female body.

Here was that link if you try testing this out: http://i.imgur.com/gvIMN.jpg

Even though this app doesn't work, I like the technique that it is
using, and this is the technique that we will be using with PhoneGap.

Researching PICUP, showed me a concept called custom URL schemes in
the iPad/iPhone world which I never heard about until now. I was able
to get a custom URL scheme to work from Zen to a test app that I
created in a Mac.

There's lots involved with creating an app for the iPad! It makes it
harder when we are not Apple fan boys.

I'll keep you informed of our progress with this.

Hi All

The problem with Picup is that you are sending the image to a third
path server and then requesting a url link back.
I just loaded the latest version of phone gap and will look into what
it will take to setup an app.

The positive side to phone gap is that it works across most mobile
devices where picup is limited to the iPad.

Joe,

Were you able to get it to work?

Were you able to upload outside of Zen? Can you post your sample code
so if you did get it to work we can try again and see?

Even if this app worked, I can see issues down the line:
1. no support if there are issues
2. files are uploaded to IMGUR.COM which for us we cannot upload
company files to other domains
3. no ability to change any of these parameters
4. you can only upload pictures - we have specs like uploading other
formats
5. it only works for IOS

It's odd that when you look at the App store, there are 203 people
that rated this app with an average of 4 stars, and 106 people gave it
5 stars. So this means that somehow people were able to get it to
work.

I was not one of those people.
