I tried sys as a password, that failed. I also tried password, abc123, cache, intersystems, and letmein.

Password is case-sensitive, did you try SYS?

I tried, SYS, sys, SYSTEM, system, syspassword, SYSPASSWORD, Sys, SysPassword, Syspassword.  Nothing worked. My username is defaulted to _system.

And now I've created my own problem!  The question about the _system password caused me to log in and look at my user config (same free Cache, version 2011.1) because it occurred to me that since installing I'd never been asked to log in.  So as my test to see if the default password for _system was indeed SYS, I disabled UnknownUser with the thought I would get the login screen.  To my surprise, I don't!  Terminal just says "access denied" and disconnects.  Portal likewise.  I can get a login screen for Studio so was able to log in (and confirm the SYS password), and when I saw it has a Utilities > Management Portal option I thought "aha, I'll go there as _system and undo what I did", but no luck -- it also just tries using UnknownUser and fails.

Thoughts?

SYS doesn't work on the version that I downloaded on 2/1. I tried logging into the Studio, but it continues to fail.  I tried all versions of SYS, including sys, Sys, System, SYSTEM, etc. Does anyone else know of another possible password? I would have expected that Intersystem's email, after I downloaded, would have included a temporary username and password. But no luck.

default install is Minimal security which means no un/pw is necessary. Everyone gets in as UnknownUser. Make sure it's enabled, and then log in to Studio and everything else without any un/pw.

I started the server first then the Studio. The root cause of my problem was that the server was not started. Once started, the _system userid and SYS password worked.

Thanks all

Good. And did you log out and try logging back in without any un/pw?
