Canadians were in for a nasty surprise in Tuesday’s budget, when the government announced that it would be extending copyright terms for sound recordings by a whopping 20 years, up from Canada’s current term of life of the creator plus 50 years.
As copyright expert Michael Geist explained, this extreme step will cost Canadians millions. And all this from the same government that has as of yet refused to address a glaring loophole that has subjected everyday Canadian to months of harassment, threats, and abuse from foreign media giants.
That’s why we teamed up with copyright organizations and experts to send the man responsible - Industry Minister James Moore - a joint letter setting out in detail what needs to be done to safeguard Canadians from media giants trying to abuse the system.
