FRs are hard to improve your play with as many people push since it costs them nothing, and the normal strategies don't always apply.  I play a lot of $3 or less private tournies via railbirds.com.

Sent from my HTC Hero smartphone so please excuse my spelling.

If anyone is looking for a great weekly league ($13 for 3 mos), check out the Amatuer World Poker Tour (www.theawpt.com).  I have been a member for a couple years and I am an ambassador for new members.  We play in 2 division on FT.  Your membership dues pay for the tourney entry fees so each week it's a freeroll.  If anyone is interested in learning more about it, check out the website and ask me anything you'd like and I'll do my best to respond.  We are always looking to grow the league so we welcome new members.

Freerolls mess me up too. Only way to go is money games baby! But I'll play freerolls every once in awhile when they pop up. You play on Full Tilt.

Hi John, the league sounds interesting. I will check it out on www.theawpt.com. I do have a comment and a question.

By freerolls, I mean the PS astronomy events in which you can win an entry to a PS WR2 event. The play in the freerolls and the play in more expensive events seems to me to differ considersbly. Play in the freerolls does not seem to prepare you for playing in the major tournaments. The difference seems to be that in the freerolls you can just sit there and wait for a hand, push, and probably get paid off. In the larger events, this strategy does not seem to work nearly as well since players are more savy and you get paid off much less frequently and so are blinded off. What I see as the better large tournament strategy is to steal hands, not just blinds and antes. Although I do well in the freerolls and small tournaments (esp small sitngos), my record in large tournaments is abysmal. Are you and any other league members interested in starting a discussion group with the specific target of improving large tournament strategy (esp steal and re-steal)  techniques. e.g. when to bet the junk board, when to bet a 3 suited flop, when to bet when the turn is the 4th suit on board, when to check-raise with not much, using position to steal and re-steal,...etc. Oh yes, and the technique I have no clue about. What to do (if there is anything to do) when you are sitting in a deep hole for hours and cannot hold a winning hand or find a successful bluffing situation. My take is that one needs to accumulate enough chips when things are going well so that you can survive when you find yourself in a deep hole for an extended time. What do you think ?

If you and others are interested, I am not much of a PC type. How would we communicate (twitter, email, phone, or ???)

Hoping to hear from you.
Jack Howard,

In my experience, which is significant, I can say with confidence that success in FRs is much more a matter of luck, not strategy, when compared with cash games, etc. I have placed ~390th or worse, but have also placed in top five. That being the case, everyone shares a relatively comparable chance of finishing in the money. Herein lies the opportunity, since we all love the game anyway.

When I have a couple of hours (our more) to spare and don't want to have the stress of a cash game, FR is perfect, and of course, it's great fun. I think it's an approach that should be given consideration, especially if one is a half decent player to begin with. My record, while singularly unimpressive, can boast a smattering of payoffs. What's to lose? As mentioned, it's fun, it costs nothing, and in my view, success is very likely in most good players' future. There is not downside!!!!

Doug-

I totally agree and that's what I was trying to say, but had a hard time responding via my phone.  I would like to amend what you said by said the first half or 3/4ths of a FR are luck as many people are simply getting good cards and pushing AI with the hopes of doubling up (or 3x/4x/etc) and getting into the top 10-20% of the field.  Once the majority of the field gets sent packing, then I think that is where the real play begins and it is where you can turn more into strategic play versus just being luck.

Do you folks feel there is any value (since you don't want to lose money in cash games) playing in play money events to hone your skills - or do you feel the people playing in those (many times) are just learning the game so the use of strategy goes out the window (back to that luck thing again)?

Hey guys...just thought I'd throw my 2cents in...I've been playing online for about 5 years now& although variance is high there, I'm drawn to large MTT events, both live & online (where I do quite well actually) ITM 10-20% of the time is a reasonable goal if you are playing properly & getting high enough in the $ when you do score...not just squeaking in the money. I totally steer away from freerolls b/c they are just bad practice afteralll, b/c like you said, they are just a shove-fest...no strategy involved...
It seems everyone has read the Harrington on holdem series, as well they should, but anyone wanting to take their game to the next level & beyond also need to read Arnold Snyder's poker tournament formula 1 & even more importantly, Mitchell Cogert's 101 Winning Moves...this book alone has elevated my play exponentially...both online & live, MTT & STT...google him & check out his website...that's the cheapest place to get his book. You can see the review I left for this book on ebay, & check out the reviews it has received on amazon, which is the reason I purchased it!!!Good luck at the tables, Johnny Brock

You're right...don't read it...I could care less...I own & have read 80+ poker books...none have ever made my game "go to shit" as you so eloquently put it, however, most have done little or nothing to improve my game either... Mitchell Cogert's book is different, teaching you the moves & counter moves you need to win in today's tournament poker...
