Thriving cities: Celebrating climate action through health, nature and culture

As part of the NetZeroCities (NZC) project, this session will explore good practices in health, nature, and culture, analyzing how these themes intersect with efforts to measure progress toward climate neutrality.

We'll discuss co-benefit indicators developed by NZC, demonstrating how cities can effectively measure and report their climate neutrality progress. Through case studies, the webinar will showcase practical applications of these indicators, providing insights into how cities can assess their climate action impact.

AdaptFin: Closing the financing gap for adaptation

In a time where cities and urban communities face high vulnerability to climate change risks, global climate finance for adaptation efforts continue to receive limited funding. Based on the success of the AdaptFin pilot training course, funded by UNDRR, this workshop will provide a snapshot of the tools and knowledge tailor- made for global cities.

Covering core topics such as where the gaps lay for vulnerable populations and why capacity-building is crucial for adaptation finance, participants will enhance their ability to identify gaps, engage relevant actors, and conceptualize bankable projects, increasing their chances of securing funding and technical assistance.

"To achieve Turku's goal of becoming a climate-neutral city by 2029, we need to have everyone on board. While we want our residents to participate, it's really important that they see the city as accountable and that sustainability actions result in concrete improvements in the citizens' welfare."

- Iris Kriikkula, Project Manager Circular Economy, City of Turku, Finland
"We developed priority-based budgeting by first identifying mayoral priorities, then working with departments to create and define programs. We allocated budget lines to these programs and scored them against priorities, allowing us to align city programs with the mayor’s goals and make more strategic decisions."

- Patrick Cornell, Chief Financial Officer, City of Pittsburgh, United States
