Since honesty and sincere expression are key to our hearty
debates, we are still and always shakuhachi brothers, so
remember to spit yer teeth out and shake hands mightily after each
naked Greco-Roman wrestling match. Actually, it feels weird
to agree with almost everything you wrote in your last email, i.e.
about the time spent on lessons, etc., because I am experiencing the
exact same situation needing two hours of practice a day just to
fulfill the needs for competence in the upcoming class. I feel I am
burning out and lot of the joy of just having fun with the flute is
rare to come by. The lady I mentioned was being humble,
but by no means I think did she show what we envision 20 years worth
of lessons to be so she was brutally honest to me. She has nice
tone, but I believe she had hoped to be much, much better by
now. I sometimes wonder where I will plateau out and just be
a barely capable player. Some of us are no-talent, just wishful
dreamers. I did not mean to infer that the teacher is not taking
affirmative action for her, but that possibly this woman is realizing
her maximum capabilities for her talent and age? My
teacher lent me the Arnold Stagg book about woodwinds and lung power
and showed me the chart about diminishing lung power with age and it
wasn't at all uplifting. I will have to increase my cardio
workout with stairs and running to fend off Father Time and Mr.
Death. I tend to swim an hour 3 to 4 times a week, but it is
definitely not enough for a lot of the longer phrases.
