Peter Herlihy and New Bedford Yacht Club Win 2026 US Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup

The 2026 US Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup, hosted by Oakcliff Sailing in Oyster Bay, N.Y., June 24–28, featured highly competitive racing despite exceptionally light winds that tested sailors and race officials throughout the weekend.

Representing New Bedford Yacht Club, Peter Herlihy and crew Finn Sperry, Sam Sperry, and Eliza Corral captured the Rose Cup in dramatic fashion, with the championship decided in the regatta’s final race against runners-up Sienna Nichols, Taylor Escola, Maddie Nichols, and Eddie Kleim of Balboa Yacht Club. Herlihy’s team lost just one race all weekend to finish with a 7-1 record, while the next three teams were tied at 6-2.

Find a Race Official

Is your club looking for certified race officials to run your races, hear protests and redress requests and make umpire calls on the water?  US Sailing has a “Find a Race Official” page on our website.  You can pull up a list of race officials by searching specific race official types, the sailing area or state and by last name.  The report will include the contact information for those race officials.

Quiz 39
Boats PI, on port tack, and SO, on starboard tack, are sailing dead downwind bow to bow approaching a leeward mark to be left to port with PI on the inside. When a length from the mark, PI bears off slightly so that she can round the mark leaving it to port without touching it. The booms of the two boats make contact with no damage or injury. SO hails, “Starboard!” and PI hails, “Room!” Both boats hail, “Protest!” SO rounds the mark behind PI. Neither boat takes a penalty. You are on the protest committee; how would you decide this?
