Here is my calendar so far.  It includes District 24 and outside events that I am seriously considering.    Missing are West Marine Open events,  Julian's clinics, and club series at Santa Cruz, Alameda, or Lake Washington.

Excellent, thanks David!  I was just about to start compiling a list myself.  Do you know anything about those Half Moon Bay regattas in April and May? I think it is the Vice Commodore's Regatta (Sept. 23) that we usually sail in. But HMBYC would probably be fine with a group showing up at any of their open regattas. Also missing is the Master's PCC's (TBD).

Santa Cruz will host Friday night racing June 16, July 21, and August 11 (before NorCals). If people sign up.

Thanks!

We should include the Lake Circuit as well: Camilia Cup, Lake Yosemite Regatta, Go for the Gold (Scott's Flat), and even Whiskeytown (that has been off the list for awhile). These are really fun camping weekends that may encourage participation from folks that live further inland. Also, lake events are great for introducing the ICLA fleet to those that are less experienced sailing Lasers in more welcoming conditions.

Cheers, -Marcel

It's great to see the days getting longer, which means that spring sailing is not too far off in the horizon. Thanks to David for starting a discussion about the calendar.

I'm planning to do as many events as possible this year which are within a half day's drive of the Bay Area. One exception that I will travel far for is the Colombia River Gorge. There's a one design regatta the first weekend, a master's clinic, and then the Skamania master's event the second weekend. Ten days of great sailing with easy launching and camping.  CGRA's calendar is here. I'd be great to have a large D24 turnout this year.

I think including Lake Events is good, and “Lake” Washington should be in that mix also. (FYI: Periodically someone from the Stockton Sailing Club asks me if they can get on the laser circuit as a venue..remember that we had a fantastic Masters PCC’s there once, mainly because the people are so darn friendly and the venue is so easy for to get to and the sailing is right in front of the cub).

As for Whiskey Town, we used to go there in the early days of Lasers, but the drive is not worth the typical “sailing” (waiting for wind in 100 degree weather) conditions.

A beautiful place  for camping but not for sailing. In my opinion not a good idea to make people go so far for such risky conditions, especially when we have so many great places closer to where many boats are kept.

The Del Rey Yacht Club PCC june 24. The club will allow up to 10 boats to be stored at the club until the North  Americans at Alamitos Bay YC July 14 for those who do not want to trailer their boats back home

How about a clinicgatta out of ACSC Sept. 23-24th to prep for Master Nationals. This could be replacement for Master PCCs. The first day is a clinic then 3 short races at the end of the day and Sunday would be a full race. Chalk talk before and after each day with video and good media coverage using a drone. we would need housing support for those traveling far.

How about a 2 day Masters clinic 2 days before the NA Masters in MDR, run by someone who belongs to DRYC and knows all the tricks down there?

Lake Yosemite Spring Regatta -
I reached out via email to the folks at Lake Yosemite Sailing Association to find out if they are planning to host their Spring Regatta. It's usually held during the middle of May.  (Their website hasn't been updated for 2023.)
LYSA has a great little club with a large lawn for tent camping. It's a great place to camp in your vehicle/van if preferred, as well. In prior years, they have served a delicious lunch and thrown a great BBQ after the racing. The lake is always an adventure. The warm afternoon breeze is really shifty and fun. The courses are, let me say, have short legs but are comprehensive. BTW, the lake has and island and has current. The folks that run the regatta lay out the red carpet. It's one of my favorite events.

Camellia Cup -  April 22nd & 23rd
The Folsom Lake Sailing Club event is another fun car camping event with variable conditions.  We've had breezier conditions and drifters in recent years. Either way, it's a warmer weather venue that is a great place to introduce newer folks to the fleet.
Unfortunately, I can't make this event this year due to a scheduling conflict, but we need a good turn-out to have a shot at the Camellia Cup. The rules for winning the Cup are always a bit fuzzy; there seems to be a bias towards the Banshees, but that's part of the adventure. 😉 Emilio did manage to steal the Cup a few years back! 🍷

Go for the Gold Regatta -
Scotts Flat Lake- Gold Country Yacht Club hasn't posted an NOR yet, but it's usually the first weekend in June (probably 3rd & 4th this year). This is another beautiful venue. Camping is really popular in the area so one needs to make reservations early.
Here's the link to the GCYC's Go for the Gold Regatta website: http://gcyc.net/gcyc-gftg2022-after.html

Whiskeytown Regatta -
As Boomer mentioned, the weather can be a bit extreme as it's held on Memorial Day weekend (May 27th & 28th) allowing for the drive. At the regatta, I've experienced temps nearing 100 degrees with minimal breeze. Other years, I've experienced rain, temps in the high 50's, blowing 15 and gusts 25 knots.  Most often, the temps are in the middle to high 80's with variable light "lake like" conditions. I'm not sure it's still kosher, but car camping at the boat ramp area was ideal. Of course, there is an abundance of campsites surrounding the lake and Redding is a 20 minute drive if a hotel is preferred.
The last time the Regatta was on the Laser GP circuit was 2016, we registered 16 boats including Jim Christopher and the folks from the Humboldt area . According to last year's results, 3 or 4 Lasers from north-coast still participate along with a fleet of (10) Aeros. 😐
Here's the link to the 2023 Whiskeytown Regatta website: https://www.whiskeytownsailing.org/2023-memorial-regatta

High Sierra Regatta -
What can be said about the Huntington Lake venue?  It's simply the best sailing lake west of the Mississippi River.  At 11 am, on-the-nose,  a 10 to 15 knot breeze fills in over the dam at the west end and rolls down the 5 mile long lake.  You can almost set your watch to it.  The alpine setting is stunning.  The camping is awesome.  You don't want to miss this regatta. It's on July 8th & 9th. A group of us usually drive up on Thursday before the regatta to get a day of play and practice before the regatta. Roger's jambalaya served with Castelli wine is not to be missed either! Here's the link for the NOR: https://www.fresnoyachtclub.org/high-sierra-regatta.

Lake Washington -
A Lake Washington event would be perfect. Just a short drive down I-80.  Do they have any annual events already primed that we can include on the GP circuit other than the Dinghy Delta Ditch (which would be interesting to include) and the Turkey Shoot?

Stockton Sailing Club-
Boomer, any interest  in reaching out to your contact to determine if they have any regattas already primed that we may include on the schedule?

Cheers, -Marcel

I believe both jobs are taken, but I'm willing to help get things roll'n.

One thing is for sure, we who mainly sail out of RYC, StFYC, ACSC need to be willing to travel to at least a couple of these inland lake events to encourage distinct-wide participation and to bring in and include new folks that may not be skilled or confident enough to deal with the SF city front and the B. Circle during the summer. These events are a great opportunity to really get to know others with similar interests outside of your familiar sailing circles. We all know new folks interested in participating. Sign-up yourself and encourage someone new to join in. The venues and regattas are set. The lake circuit is definitely more casual, often more social, and a whole lot of fun.  Just put it on the calendar and go!

BTW, I left Stampede off my list. I apologize to Rick and his crew up at Lake Tahoe Yacht Club.  They put together an outstanding regatta / camping event at Stampede Lake just north of Truckee. (See Al's write up.)  Enjoy great short-course racing and delicious group BBQ. There's a reason they very often get the best turnout on the GP Circuit. Book September 8th & 9th, too! I'm sure Rick will chime in with details as they become available.

The 4th Mid-winter race at RYC is on March 4th. That's the traditional kickoff of the GP season.  Sign-up if you haven't done so already! I'm ready to roll. LET'S GO!

Enough happy talk for Monday. 😉

Cheers, -Marcel

About 2 years ago they were very hung ho,
I copied Stephen on a few emails and I assumed he was speaking to them but nothing ever came of it.

They have a small group of Laser sailors there and it would be great to get them more involved.

I would reach out to them again if I had any confidence that something would become of it. June is the best month for wind and temperature.

I would also love to hear about the theoretical Masters oCC’s at Lake Washington (is it going to happen, if so when.

Good morning,  Normally I put the  Schedule out in February some years old earlier but most years of February. And like some of you  I've been waiting To hear from lake  Yosemite. Also been trying to figure out a  Date to move Monterey to the fall Late summer because they can't do it in May the ramp is being worked on  This Spring . Vice  Commodores cup has moved from October. My Internet has been spotty at best I'm back home since last week And I just got these emails yesterday  . So as soon as I hear from  Lake Yosemite I will publish the schedule that I have and the rules.

Sorry for the late reply... was at Worlds. A clinicgatta out of ACSC Sept. 23-24th to prep for Masters PCCs would be great.
