Thanks Boomer. My parents had fond memories of competing against Don in Snipes back in the 1950s, and they bought our first Laser from him in 1978.
It's hard to overstate Don's impact on the Laser class and, given the boat's popularity, his impact on our sport in general. The reason is that Don's company, Performance Sailcraft in San Rafael, built a significant portion of the Lasers during the 1970s, helping the class achieve critical mass and momentum that continues to this day. That output, along with Don's infectious enthusiasm for promoting the sport, helped establish the Laser (now ILCA) as the most popular all-ages sailboat class in the world, with the most international representation of any Olympic sailing event.
