Better late than never, I just now realized that this RYC Midwinters Report for the IlCA 7s from Emilio didn't get sent to the entire group. Doing so now, and it'll also go into The ILCA Sailor North American Newsletter. Thanks E.

Al:

Here is the report.

Lots copied from Jenny.

The Richmond Midwinters turned out to be a truly international regatta for the ILCA 7 fleet. We managed to sail all four Sundays with pretty much a complete range of conditions.

The first Sunday, sailed in a sunny cold day saw three different winners of three different nationalities; Ireland, Canada and US.

Second Sunday saw Irish like weather and in fact James Esprey from Ireland won all four races.

The third Sunday was the lightest and flukiest conditions with only two races completed.

By the last Sunday the battle was on between Dave Lapier in the lead, James Esprey in second and Colin Brochard in third. James and David did not show so Colin won the event proving once more that showing up is half the game. In the four final races Al was almost unstoppable with 3 bullets but not quite enough to overtake me in the final results.

Colin won the regatta, with Emilio in second and Al in third.

We had a solid twenty Ilca 7 registered for this regatta; a good sign for the 2026 season.

Richmond Yacht Club Small Boat Midwinters – ILCA 6 Recap

This year’s Richmond Yacht Club Small Boat Midwinters delivered a full spectrum of Bay conditions, testing adaptability, endurance, and tactical awareness across the ILCA 6 fleet.  We miraculously got in all four days of sailing, an unusual winter occurrence.  Overall Brendan Choi took 1st pace, I took 2d, and Ernest Galvan took 3d.

Day One brought classic winter sailing: sunny skies, solid breeze, and crisp, cold air. Four races were completed in steady conditions, with tight racing throughout the fleet and close battles upwind and downwind.  The ILCA6 fleet was grateful that the Race Committee made a long enough line to make starting at the same time as the ILCA7 fleet manageable.

Day Two shifted dramatically. A slightly stormy and freezing start made staying warm and monitoring your level of shivering part of the necessary strategy. The breeze oscillated between dead spots and sharp gusts, demanding constant adjustment and patience. Despite the challenging conditions, four races were completed, and the day ended in spectacular fashion with clearing skies and vivid rainbows over the course.

Day Three saw lighter air, with two races completed. In a crossover between the Bay and the concert stage, both Brendan and I were absent that weekend due to musical commitments — Brendan performed in a violin concert and I attended the GRAMMY Awards — before returning for the final day of racing.

The fourth and final day delivered near-perfect conditions: sunshine, steady breeze, and a strong ebb that rewarded smart current management and confident mark roundings. Four more races wrapped up a competitive and varied series.

Throughout the event, the ILCA 6 fleet enjoyed close place battles, crowded mark roundings, the occasional capsize, and the added complexity of navigating traffic from other fleets sharing the course.  Many a lively rule conversation was had due to the close-quarters racing.  Brendan put together a consistently strong series to take first place overall, demonstrating impressive speed and control across the wide range of conditions.

Thank you to the Richmond Yacht Club Race Committee for running an efficient and well-managed series across everything from winter squalls to classic Bay breeze.  For those who missed the freezing January day, here's a picture of one of the aforementioned rainbows:
