Hi, dancers,

On April 26, 2021, Tom is taking it easy by choosing dances that have only one figure that has only four steps.

Šeta     Serbia

A four-step grapevine.  We often start our dance evening with this one.
Step right to side right, and then left in front, etc.
Extra info:  Šetnja has additional steps.

Nyandolo   Kenya

Four Sways and Steps.  The circle moves slowly right.
Step and sway R, Sway L, Sway R, and Close L to R.
Arms are bent at the elbow and the fists turned so thumbs are on top. Knuckles touch the knuckles of the two dancers on either side.
Nyandolo is from the Kisa people of Kenya, and was introduced by France Bourque-Moreau.
Extra info:   There are other more complicated versions of the dance online.

We have not yet danced Nyandolo, but we featured it on August 7, 2020.
Coincidentally, Paul Collins taught it in his Zoom session that same evening.

Hanter Dro   Brittany (France)

Hanter Dro means “Half Turn.”
Yves Moreau taught this dance at Camp High Scope in 1980.
With lyrics by Dir Ha Tan,
Quand j'étais jeune/When I Was Young:

The four steps:
Step sideways (diagonally) to left with left foot.  Close with right.  Step to left with left.  Step (slightly) backwards with right.

Our music is popular with folk dance groups, but it
is not used in any of these versions on Folk Dance Musings.

The lyrics:  In our version a man sings that he was handsome and gallant at age 18, and lovers came to him in his room in the evening. The youngest brought him an orange, which fell on his foot and broke his leg.
The doctor wanted to amputate his leg, but he said, “No, my leg will not be cut off because I live on my income,” (i.e., I am rich.)

The leader sings and then the group repeats:

Quand j'étais jeune à dix-huit ans
J'étais beau et galant o-gué.

Les amoureuses me venaient
Le soir dedans ma chambre o-gué,

La plus jeune des amoureuses
M'apporté une orange o-gué,

L'orange est tombé sur mon pied,
Elle a cassé ma jambe o-gué,

On fit venir un medécin
De Paris ou de Nantes o-gué,

Le medécin qui me soignait
Voulut couper ma jambe o-gué,

Non ma jambe ne sera pas coupée
Car je vis de mes rentes o-gué,
