Hi, dancers,
On Monday Tom taught two dances that he hadn't done in years and were
rarely, if ever, done by our current dance group: Jon Jon (Armenian) and
Mantinades (Greek) a dance for which we have little information.
The word, "Mantinades," designates a fifteen-syllable Cretan poem
(like a limerick). Mantinades are the most common form of Cretan folk
songs and are a form of musical declamation and emotional expression that
can be composed by anyone. There are thousands of them.
“A Cretan does not say in plain words what he feels,
With mantinades he weeps or with laughter he peals!”
(from explore crete)
