Hi dancers,
March is Women's History Month, and we are recognizing women who are an important part of
folk dance history. This week we are featuring a Romanian dance that was taught by a master
teacher and Romanian specialist, Sunni Bloland.
Trei Păzeşte Bătrânesc Romania
This dance from Oltenia has been one of my (Tom’s) favorites since I learned it in 1979-80. We have always called this dance "Trei Pazeste.” Outside of Detroit the dance is called “Trei Păzeşte Bătrânesc,” something I learned last November when I danced it on Zoom for the Chicago Virtual Dance Room. The name means (roughly) ”take care three times.”

We do the dance as it is done in the second video.
There are some differences in the others: men doing
the dance first, only two stamps before traveling (rather than three), and an additional stamp and a shortened traveling part. Former Detroit dancer, Susan S, appears in the first and fourth videos. (Hi, Susan!)
Sunni Bloland
Sunni Bloland taught at Camp High Scope in 1975, 1980, and 1988, and we still do many of the dances
she taught.
Frances Alexandria Lober was born in New York, the child of a Ukranian mother and English father.
She studied dance at Boston University, attended graduate school at the U of Wisconsin, met and married Harley Bloland, and began teaching at U of C Berkely in 1960 where she taught for thirty years.
In 1967 she received a Fulbright Scholarship to
Romania to study her specialty, Romanian folk dance. She then taught dancing and dance culture at camps around the country until her retirement.
