Hi, dancers,
On an unusually cold and rainy Monday night in May, we danced two "new" and exciting dances.
Zek, Zek, Dadumle (Roma/Romanian) is considered by some to be
the dance of the pandemic. Introduced by Steve Kotansky, it was taught on Zoom in 2020 by Robert Baignoli to 400 dancers for the Folk Arts Center of New England. This lively music from Romania become very popular in other Balkan countries.
We also danced Merak Qe S’ma, to the song "Merak Qe S’ma Ike Kurre" by the Albanian (Tosk) singer, Eduart Dema. Dancers alternate cocek and syrtos sequences to music that has been very popular with young Albanians.
We commemorated May Day with a maypole dance, Stella de Maggio or Star of May from Switzerland, and we danced the Laz work song, Heyamo.
For Bird Day (May 4, today!) we danced a dance with birdsong in the recording, Sardana Curta, and also Ciocarlanu, the lark. Please keep your treasured folk-dance cats indoors to help birds survive during nesting and migration.
No Friday Dancing on May 5th, this week. Dancing on Mondays and Fridays scheduled for the rest of May except for Memorial Day, May 29.
