Please join us for international folk dancing this Sunday, Feb 15, at Concourse Hall in Ann Arbor from 2 to 5 pm.
At the dance, there will be teaching during the first hour of instruction for beginners. The open dancing will begin around 3 p.m. The first hour of open dancing will include many beginner-friendly dances.
We will have a special invited instructor this time.
Susan Kirschner, who dances with the International Folk Dance Club of Detroit, will be with us. Susan is a beautiful dancer and experienced dance teacher who danced in the George Tomov Troupe in NYC for many years. She also had the good fortune to study intensively with several major Yemenite choreographers.
Susan will teach two short and simple hand dances - no footwork involved! - during the first hour. (Drake will teach the rest of that hour.) Around 3:30, Susan will teach Se'e Yona, an Israeli dance in Yemenite style.
Yemenite dance was influenced very much by its location on trade routes. This resulted in a specific style, different from other styles we may be more familiar with. Susan wants to remind us that style comes over time. The goals of the instruction are to learn the steps, enjoy moving to the music, and get a feeling for the style.
