Hi, dancers,
Çepki, a dance that Tom taught on Monday, is a variant of
the Halay, a line dance from Turkey (Anatolia).  It was taught
at the Door County Folk Festival 2024, and Folk Dance Musings
provides a syllabus for Çepki - Varto Halayi.
Varto (Gimgim in Kurdish) is a town in Muş Province which is
located in Turkish Kurdistan and has a Kurdish Majority.
Muş is also a city and a district. Of course, Kurds and Turks
are the ethnic groups that dance the Halay.
Çepki - Varto Halayi was taught by Ercüment Kılıç  who learned it
from Rosin Koma.  Kiliç, who was born in Ankara of Turkish Azerbaijani
parents, actively promotes Turkish culture and dance throughout
Although we don't have a video of the dance or of the music
we danced to on Monday, here is Varto Çepki, played by Kurdish
musician Erol Berxwedan who was born in Varto in 1983.
Note:  Çep means "left" in Kurdish.
