Hi, dancers,
Sally and Marianne attended the Bulgarian dance workshop at the BACC on Saturday where
they danced Djipai, so Tom did a quick reteach of this dance.  In Detroit, we call it Djipai,
a word that dancers in recordings and videos shout out, and for which we found one translation,"Skip."  The (perhaps) more common names, Cigansko and Ciganskoto reference the style of the Roma as Cigan, or a Romani person. Cigansko is the adjective form. The dance, however, is Bulgarian and was choreographed by a Bulgarian dance group.
Here's the music, Đipaj Kermes by Serbian, Aleksandar Sanja Ilic ( March 27, 1951 - March 7, 2021 of complications from COVID), a famous composer of Balkan pop and rock music, and the Balkanika Brass Orchesstra.
Through the years, Friday dancers often put down their snacks and abandoned their conversations to get into this exciting dance.  According to Folk Dance Musings, "There are many dances called Cigansko. This one is a variant of the dance Čičovata."
