Hi, dancers, Here is our unedited email from June 12, 2023.
"This week Tom taught Vlaško Horo, a dance we haven't done in a while.  It was a pleasure to dance it again. This Bulgarian dance was introduced in the US by Yves Moreau, as well as by François Legault, and Boris Valkov.
The word, "Vlasko" references the Vlachs:  "Vlachs, or ancient peoples speaking Latin-based languages, reside all over the Balkans. Dances containing the words Vlasko, Vlaha, Vlainja, Vlakha, Vlachi, Vlashi, Valach, Vllah, Woloch (Polish), and Olah (Hungarian) all refer to Vlachs."   (From Folk Dance Footnotes)

Here's a little more about the Vlachs that we're sending for the first time.
"They have many names: Rumani, Arumani, Vlach, Koutsovlachos (Greek), Choban (Albanian), Tsintsar or Vlasi (Slavic), Karagouni (Turkish), and more. Yet those Vlachs of the Balkans not fully assimilated by their host nations have one thing in common – they speak a language apparently deriving from the Latin spoken by the Roman conquerors who arrived in the region more than 2,000 years ago.  They inhabit at least six Southeastern European countries: Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia-Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia.
(From The Aromanian Cultural Society Farsharotu)

A note:  In the Balkans, the Romance languages (derived from Roman Latin)
are forms of Romanian and  Aromanian, the language that is most often spoken by the Vlachs.
The Society Farsharotu  (quoted above) writes that it "is the prime resource and community for people of Aromanian descent in the US and all others who are interested in our unique culture, language, and history." (The name refers to a sub group of Aromanians.)

Dancing is scheduled weekly for Mondays and Fridays for the first three weeks of March.  The remaining dates are to be determined.
