Hi dancers,

On July 23, 2021, we're taking another look at Our Hit Parade, a collection of our 34 most popular dances - based on the number of times they were played during a year of dancing.  Today's dance is number 10, the Dance of the Nanny.

Vallja e Dados  Albania
Korce, Albania (Jim Gold International & Traditat Kulturore Shqiptare)
Korce  (Barde Pojani teaching; presented byJim Gold.)

This is a Pogonishte-type dance from the area around Kolonje and Permet in southern Albania in the Tosk region.  The dance is also spelled Valle e Dados.
Korce is next to Kolonje.

Music only, the version we use, by Aleks Xhelili:

Steve Kotansky leading:

This is not Valle e Dados but worth watching:
Osman Taka
Osman Taka was a 19th century guerrilla fighter who escaped execution by dancing, unfortunately not for long.  It is also a traditional dance of the Cham people of Albania that requires strength and agility to form a bridge.

The modern Albanian alphabet is based on an extended Latin alphabet which was introduced in 1908. It consists of 36 letters some of which were adapted to represent Albanian sounds. Before that, Albanian was written using the Greek alphabet, the Cyrillic alphabet, and the Turkish version of the Arabic alphabet.

Permet, Kolonje, and Korce are in the southeast.
