Hi, dancers,
Last night Tom taught part of Kopačka from N. Macedonia.
It's not too late to sign up for the 46th Annual Door County Folk
Festival where Tom will be teaching this dance in its entirety.
(Friday-Sunday, July 11-13, 2025, in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.)
Ron Houston explains why the first part of the dance is easy and slow but
changes into a dance that has often sent beginning dancers scurrying to the
sidelines: “When the dance Kopačka was choreographed, “Dimna Juda” was put
on the front as a slow part (presumably because of the related melody and the
need for some slower warm up steps). The theme of Kopačka is agriculture and
it is unconnected with “Dimna Juda.”
I believe historically that neither song has anything to do with Kopačka as a
village dance. In the Berovo-Delčevo area of Macedonia from where Kopačka
comes, villagers have danced it just to tâpan accompaniment.”

This link has extensive info on Kopačka, summing it up with,
"Guys, it's just a dance."
Dancing Fridays and Mondays in June.
Celebrate summer's arrival at 10:42 pm by dancing this Friday, June 20th.
In Michigan, this is a wonderful, short, and much anticipated season of
mosquitos, ticks and no-see-ums, oppressive heat and humidity, increased
allergies, algae blooms, potential drought and wildfires, dodging kids on bikes,
over-crowded attractions and parks, and a lot of lawn work.
Did you know that besides the Great Lakes as a source of humidity
we can now blame "corn sweat." One acre of this pervasive and often
genetically modified plant can release 4000 gallons of moisture into the air.
"While essential to the diet of native Americans, the annual acreage of corn in North America
around the time of early European settlement was thought to be no more than 50,000 acres (compared to around 110 million acres now.)" (from Pioneer Seeds)
