Hi, dancers,
Happy St. Patrick's Day, our coldest in 50 years and 40 degrees colder
than yesterday. Winds that have reached 71 mph in our area didn't
deter Monday dancers who enjoyed a dance for PI Day (3/14) and another for
St.Patrick's.  Today we're featuring the Irish dance, The Stack of Barley.
Here's the dance from folkpourtous folkdanses ("folk for all"):
The Stack of barley is a country Hornpipe dance, a lively, popular style of dances done in Ireland and Britain dating from the 16th century. Legend says that sailors who were stuck in the doldrums created it.  "In fact, the popular dance was adopted by sailors like Captain Cook who recognized it as an effective exercise routine aboard ships which have limited space. It soon became a popular pastime and an official part of Royal Navy training." (Wickipedia)

For an easy Irish dish today you might try Colcannon, basically, sauteed cabbage slaw with mashed potatoes. Also great as a vegan dish.
"Did you ever eat Colcannon, made from lovely pickled cream?
With the greens and scallions mingled like a picture in a dream.
Did you ever make a hole on top to hold the melting flake
Of the creamy, flavoured butter that your mother used to make?"

Dancing weekly on Mondays and Fridays in March.
