Hi, dancers,
On Monday, Tom taught the Macedonian dance, Katushe Mome, that is danced
to the song, "Katuše Pusto Katuše." "Mome" has been translated online as"young
woman" or "girl" with a sweet connotation for rural speakers, and one translation is
"Katushe, My Dear." This dance shares its melody with a version of a Macedonian
dance, Shto Mi E Milo. (See videos below.)
Katushe Mome was introduced by Dick Crum in 1959 at the Stockton Folk Dance Camp,
and it was presented by other instructors in later years. The lyrics of the song are the
words of young man trying to persuade Katushe of the disadvantages of marrying
a drunkard. He tells her that workers have money, but bums have peppers.
(Wisdom to remember?)
Here is a beautiful version from the Michel Cartier series featuring the Macedonian
Choir of Sophia. The old, vinyl version.
Katuše, beautiful Katuše
look what was fated for you—
to marry the biggest drunkard of all,
that Nikola the bum.
All the men have gone away to earn a living,
your man’s gone to the tavern.
Oh, Katuše,
I’m burning up for you, dearie.
All the men have gone to the market,
your man has gone to the wine-barrels.
Oh, Katuše,
I’m burning up for you, dearie.
The ones that have gone away to work have strings of florins,
the bums have strings of peppers.
Oh, Katuše,
I’m burning up for you, dearie.
