The Fairtrade group in the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames (a
London borough) would like to add our congratulations to Saarbrucken,
and to Germany Fairtrade movement.
We have a twin town in Germany: Oldenburg. In June two members of our
group will be visiting to talk about Fairtrade universities (we have
one) and Fairtrade Towns. Later in June two other members of our
group are holidaying in Germany and will be taking the opportunity to
talk to other Fairtrade supporters. It is a wonderful to have these
links and to be able to help other people.
Kingston has the largest Korean community in Europe and last year we
welcomed Korean students interested in Fairtrade, and keen to make
their own university in Korea a Fairtrade University. Later this year
another Korean student hopes to come.
In my lifetime Korea has been ravaged by war and extremely poor.
Since then South Korea has come a very long way but it is by no means
as rich as most Western countries. It is a fine thing that young
Koreans are already so keen to help people poorer than themselves, and
I don’t doubt that this applies in many other countries too.
