It has been mentioned before that the horrors of genital cutting should not keep us from keeping our sense of humor and having the occasional laugh.

Dan Strandjord and I recently exchanged some videos with Israeli and US-American comedy on the topic of male genital cutting in the biblical, jewish context.

Since I'm sure that this might be of interest to some of you, I'm listing my favourite picks here, most of them featuring the story about the circumcision by Abraham in Genesis 17.

First, the material from Israel:

Sketch from the Israeli comedy series "The Jews are coming" where Abraham circumcises his sons - this is my favourite. Since it cannot be watched outside Israel, I had a friend download it via VPN so I could put it on my google drive and link it from there: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1I40-wkRax3M-piszKVd9DXd4kSVQjTS9/view?usp=sharing

Now the US-American clips:

I'm fully aware that this might not fit everyone's taste. I also found material that I felt offended by and if some of you feel offended by these videos, I completely understand.

If you have other recommendations, I am also interested, of course. I think it can be refreshing to have a humoristic starting point for a conversation on this heavily loaded topic. Also, the quality of the humor on a topic can give a sense of how far developed a society's ability to reflect on it already is. For me it was surprising to see that both in Israel and the USA, very well known comedians with Jewish background have taken up the issue in a way that works well humoristically and at the same time asks the real questions about core social values and human rights, or at least clearly illustrates the way the topic is treated in social contexts.

Thanks for sharing these Ephraim.

While the U.S. entertainment industry that produces movies and television shows still seems to treat foreskins as disgusting and circumcision as a benign or even preferred practice, there's also a trend for stand-up comedians here to tackle the circumcision/foreskin issue with humor, but in such a way that it's educational and/or from a clearly pro-foreskin or anti-circumcision position.
